PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team will hold its annual Blue-Gold Exhibition meet this Saturday, December 6 when the Panthers take on Kent State at 2 p.m.at the Fitzgerald Field House.
"The closer and closer it gets to Blue-Gold, the girls and coaches are becoming more excited," said head coach Debbie Yohman. "We ran into some obstacles early in the fall with injuries but will have full lineups for tomorrow though a few of the girls will be sporting some simpler vaults and floor routines due to those injuries and being in the process of upgrading skills. However, the closer we get, the people we have in those depth positions are picking it up and doing what we thought they would do."
The Panthers lineup will consist of seven gymnasts who return from last year's squad including juniors Lisa Soto, Maebelle Pacheco, Tiara Chadran and Lindsay Offutt, along with sophomores Erika Reichert, Kelly Burak and Tracey Pearson. However, only Soto, Burak, Pacheco and Offutt competed in any of the lineups for the team last season. Chadran, Reichert and Pearson will all compete in the official lineups for the first time in their careers tomorrow afternoon.
Four newcomers will make their debut for the Panthers tomorrow including freshmen Maegan Higdon, Dani Hall and Taylor Laymon along with junior transfer Miya Dotson. Dotson will be the only newcomer with previous experience in competition as she spent two years with the gymnastics program at Western Michigan.
"This team is very motivated and very passionate about what they are doing. Come the season I believe they are going to get the job done.
The Panthers open up the regular season on Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Fitzgerald Field House when Pitt hosts Ohio State in its first official meet of the season.
