KENT, Ohio – The University of Pittsburgh men’s and women’s track and field teams are set to open the 2015-16 season this weekend at the Golden Flash Gala hosted by Kent State University.
The meet will begin on Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. with the women’s weight throw, which will be followed by the men’s weight throw. Other events on Friday include the women’s pole vault, the women’s long jump, the men’s and women’s 5,000 meter run, the women’s pentathlon, and the first four events of the men’s heptathlon.
Saturday will feature the majority of the running events, along with the high jump, shot put and triple jump in the field.
The Panthers will have the majority of their athletes in action this weekend, besides the men’s long distance team. A core nucleus of athletes return from last year’s team that sent 11 athletes to the NCAA Outdoor East Regional Meet and two athletes (Desmond Palmer and Evann Thompson) to the NCAA National Championship Meet.
In the throws, Andrew Wells has legitimate aspirations of making the NCAA Indoor National Championship Meet in his final collegiate season. Wells, who only has indoor eligibility remaining, was one spot shy of qualifying for indoor nationals last year. He will be in action this weekend in the shot put and weight throw.
This will be the only meet for the Panthers before the holiday break as Pitt returns to action on January 9th at the Penn State Relays.
