Ethan Shalaway Wins Javelin at Jesse Owens Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Sophomore thrower Ethan Shalaway won his second javelin title of the year on Friday evening in the first day of action at the Jesse Owens Classic on the campus of Ohio State.
Shalaway won the event with a distance of 64.03m and was four meters clear of second place. Shalaway will enter the ACC Championship Meet with the league's third best distance and will be in contention to win the conference crown.
In that women's javelin throw, Taylor Slaney and Brooke Shasteen had strong showings as Slaney was third overall with a 45.08, while Shasteen was fourth with a toss of 41.36m.
One more notable finish in the field was Haley Springman who made the finals of the discus and placed seventh overall with a throw of 46.09m. 
A few long distance events were featured on Friday evening as well, including the men's and women's 5,000 meter run. In the opening heat of the men's 5K, Michael Runco set a personal-record with a time of 14:43.42 and was third in that heat and ninth overall. Dee Dee Adams was eighth in the opening heat of the women's event with a time of 17:55.10.
In the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase, Karli O'Neill (11:19.14) placed fourth overall, while Caroline DeFrank (11:35.70) was seventh.
Grad student Hana Casalnova led eight Panthers in the 1,500 meter run with a 22nd place finish in a time of 4:35.43, while freshman Amy Kelly was one spot behind in 23rd with a personal-best time of 4:38.39.
Action at Ohio State continues tomorrow when the majority of the meet will conclude with the last event starting approximately around 4 p.m.
