CORAL GABLES, Fla. – After a day that saw multiple delays due to lightening and rain, the Pitt tennis team completed its first day of competition at the Miami Fall Invite hosted by the University of Miami at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Friday.
Senior Amber Washington was the lone Panther to advance out of the singles round of 16 and in to the quarterfinals. The veteran defeated Ana Madcur of Miami 6-2, 6-2 and will take on the No. 1 seed Miho Kowase of Ohio State tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
Although suffering her first singles loss of the fall season, Audrey Ann Blakely did not go down easy to No. 117 Gabrilla De Santis of Ohio State as she claimed the second set, but ultimately fell 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
“I am proud of a couple of our upperclassmen,” head coach Alex Santos said. “Amber Washington and Audrey Ann Blakely definitely stepped up today. They showed that they have a word to say at the highest level.”
Three freshmen made their collegiate debut today, including Carina Ma, Natsumi Okamoto and Gabriela Rezende.
“We are very happy to see our freshmen competing for the University of Pittsburgh for the first time,” Santos said. “They have a lot of potential and I am confident they will give Pitt tennis a lot of joy in the years to come.”
Blakely and Ma will compete in the consolation finals tomorrow at 2 p.m. after losing to Muller/Turner of Auburn 0-8 and advancing thanks to a bye from fellow Panthers Clara Lucas and Callie Frey.
Six Panthers will compete in the singles consolation quarterfinals tomorrow starting at 8 a.m.
“We have to give credit where credit is due,” Santos said. “Today our opponents played better tennis than us. I would say that the most important thing for tomorrow is that we show that we are able to regroup and fight for what we want.”
