Day Two Draws
EVANSTON, Ill. – Sophomore Callie Frey is set to compete in the final round of the White singles on Sunday after taking down Athena Trouillot of Michigan State in the semifinals prior to defeating the top seed Skylar Kuykendall of LSU in the quarterfinals.
“I am very happy to have one of our players in the singles final of a tournament of this quality,” head coach Alex Santos said. “Callie knows that tomorrow she will have to leave it on the court to have a chance to win, but she has been really methodical in her approach to every single match.”
In her first match of the day, Frey shut down the top seed, 6-1 in the first set. Frey clinched the match after Kuykendall retired. In the semifinal round, Frey showed dominance once again as she took down Trouillot 6-2, 6-2.
Junior Lolade Ogungbesan had a strong showing in the consolations, as she advanced to the final round after taking down Aslina Chua of Michigan State 7-5, 6-3 and Carmen Blanco of Ball State 6-3, 7-5.
“I’m proud of Lolade,” Santos said. “She is starting to play the type of physical, aggressive tennis that we want her to be playing.”
Junior Audrey Ann Blakely put up a tough fight against Lee Or of Northwestern, dropping the first set 6-1, and a hard fought 7-5 loss in the second set.
“Audrey bounced back from a tough loss yesterday and found a way to win without playing her best tennis,” Santos said. “That is the type of quality we will need in order to accomplish our goals. We are excited for tomorrow and hopefully we will finish the tournament on a high note.”
