Day Three Results
EVANSTON, Ill. -- In its last day of competition at the Wildcat Invite, the Pitt tennis team had a strong finish as sophomore Callie Frey placed second in the White singles draw.
"We definitely finished on a high note and I couldn't be prouder of the team," head coach Alex Santos said. "Our effort, competitiveness, the way we carried ourselves on the court, how we stayed poised under pressure, and the quality of tennis we played was tremendous."
Frey put up another hard fought battle today, this time in the championship match. The Pittsburgh native took the first set from No. 106 Abby Owens of LSU, 3-6, and fell in the second and third sets 7-5, 6-0.
In the singles back draw matches, four Panthers posted wins over their opponents. Senior Amber Washington defeated Lexi Baylis of Michigan State, 6-0, 6-1, while junior Lolade Ogungbesan shut out Emmy Virkus of Michigan State, 6-0, 6-0. Freshmen Natsumi Okamoto and Carina Ma also recorded wins in the back draw. Okamoto defeated Kate Lanier of Kentucky, 6-1, 6-0, and Ma took down Renu Sharma of Eastern Michigan, 6-1, 6-1.
Doubles action saw multiple Pitt victories in the back draw matches as well. Ogungbesan/Washington recorded back-to-back wins, first over Altansarnai/Hahn of UIC, 6-1, followed by Rooney/Or of Northwestern, 6-2.
Junior Audrey Ann Blakely and freshman Gabriela Rezende also collected two wins in doubles today as they defeated Ormund/Sbircea of Ball State, 6-2, and Nguyen/Truillot of Michigan State, 6-2.
Rounding out the doubles victories was the freshmen duo of Okamoto/Ma who posted a 6-4 win over Zelechonok/Chua of Michigan State.
"We've said that we needed to improve our doubles, and the girls really took it to another level and are gaining a lot of confidence," Santo said. "If we are able to keep this intensity and consistency, while improving the little details, we will have a lot to be proud of in the near future."
The Panthers have a weekend off before heading to New Haven, Conn., for the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Yale, Oct. 9-11.
