"I'm definitely very happy with the way we competed and the way that we played," head coach Alex Santos said. "The goal was to play a lot of matches in both doubles and singles and that's exactly what we did. We had the entire team participating and that was the main goal."
The tandem of junior Lolade Ogungbesan and redshirt senior Amber Washington capped off an undefeated weekend by defeating Sophia Geier and Karalina Maksimava 6-2 in doubles. The duo was crowned doubles champions, while Ogungbesan also won singles.
The only loss in doubles for the Panthers came at the hands of Carli Knezevich and Ariadna Blinova as they defeated Pitt's Audrey Ann Blakley and Gabriela Rezende 6-1.
The Panthers shined together in singles play, going undefeated through six matches against the Zips.
After a back-and-fourth first set that ended in a Pitt 6-3 victory, Ogungbesan dominated the second set over Sophia Geier. She went on to win the second set 6-2 and never trailed the rest of the match.
Blakely was nearly perfect in singles play today as she dominated the entire match and defeated Karalina Maksimava 6-0, 6-1.
Washington was lights out in the opening set as she collected a 6-2 win. She got behind in the second set, 5-2, but went on to finish the set 7-5.
Ma won a long and tough battle over Akron's Ariadna Blinova. She won both sets in the tiebreaker, defeating Blinova 7-6, 7-6.
Fellow freshmen Rezende and Clara Lucas also impressed in singles play. After going down 3-2 in the first set, Rezende rebounded and never looked back. She went on to win the first set and was overpowering in the second as she claimed a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Carli Knezevich.
Lucas controlled both sets en route to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Carla Flores.
"I think the freshmen have been doing a great job of being open, learning, and also bringing a little bit of their own depth, and that's been improving the program," Santos said.
The Panthers will resume action on Jan. 23 when the West Virginia Mountaineers come to Pittsburgh for a 10 a.m. match.
