PITTSBURGH - The Pitt tennis team (1-0) defeated West Virginia (0-1) 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center. The Panthers claimed 2-of-3 doubles and 5-of-6 singles on the day.
"It's always important to start with a win," head coach Alex Santos said. "It gives the team a lot of confidence. I was particularly happy with how we played in doubles. We were one court down and Audrey Ann [Blakely] and Gabriela [Rezende] did a great job getting us on the scoreboard. Callie [Frey] and Carina [Ma] took care of business and stayed poised, so I was happy with that. In singles, we got three points on the board really fast to give us the win, so the rest were just a cherry on top."
In doubles, redshirt senior Amber Washington and junior Lolade Ogungbesan suffered their first loss of the season, falling 6-1 to WVU's Hailey Barrett and Habiba Shaker at No. 1 doubles. However, junior Audrey Ann Blakely and freshman Gabriela Rezende recorded an impressive 6-3 win over Lyn Yuen Choo and Yvon Martinez at No. 3, splitting the doubles wins. It then came down to the duo of sophomore Callie Frey and freshman Carina Ma to give the Panthers the doubles point. The tandem outlasted Paula Goetz and Carolina Lewis in the tiebreaker, 7-3.
With a 1-0 advantage entering singles, Ma continued to dominate as she quickly took down Goetz 6-3, 6-0. Frey soon followed with a win at No. 4 as she defeated Lewis, 6-, 6-3, giving Pitt a 3-0 lead in the dual.
At No. 1 singles, Blakely claimed the first set, 7-6 (4), and shutout Barrett in the second 6-0. Blakely's win secured the dual in the Panthers' favor.
The Mountaineers then picked up their lone point of the day as Shaker defeated Ogungbesan 7-5, 7-5.
At No. 6 singles, freshman Clara Lucas collected her first career dual win as she outlasted Martinez 6-4, 7-6 (5).
Rezende was the last Panther to finish today as she took two of three sets from Choo, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.
Pitt returns to action on Feb. 5 and Feb. 6 to take on Youngstown State and Penn State, respectively. Both duals are set to take place at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
