CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Despite a career night from sophomore Stasha Carey, the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team fell to Boston College 54-43 on Thursday night at Conte Forum.
Carey scored a career high 26 points and added 13 rebounds, five steals and three blocks. It was her second double-double of the season and the ninth of her career.
A cold fourth quarter ultimately doomed the Panthers (8-11, 0-6 ACC), who were outscored by the Eagles (13-5, 1-4 ACC) 14-3 in the decisive 10 minutes.
Boston College opened the game by scoring the first 10 points, but Carey then took over and scored 14 of Pitt's first 17 points (without missing a shot) and helped the Panthers close the first quarter on a 15-2 run.
The game was tied 17-17 after the first quarter, but Carey remained on fire and ultimately made her first eight shots of the game, including a runner in the lane with 8:32 left in the first half which gave the Panthers their first lead of the game (19-17).
Carey scored 21 points in the first half on 9-of-11 shooting which helped Pitt lead 30-27 at the break. She also contributed four steals, three rebounds and one block in the first 20 minutes of play.
The two teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter, but a 3-pointer from BC's Kelly Hughes at the buzzer tied the contest at 40 apiece entering the fourth.
That 3-pointer from Hughes sparked a 10-0 BC run as the Eagles grabbed a 47-40 lead and forced a Pitt timeout with 6:33 remaining in the contest. Hughes hit another triple out of the timeout to cap what would ultimately be a 13-0 run which gave the Eagles the separation they would need for the victory. Hughes ended with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday when they travel to take on Virginia in Charlottesville. Tip is set for 1 p.m. on RSN and can be seen locally in Pittsburgh on ROOT SPORTS.
