CLEMSON, S.C. - Stasha Carey's layup with 15 seconds remaining lifted the University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team to 59-56 road victory at Clemson University on Sunday afternoon at Jervey Gym.
With the game tied at 56 and Clemson on offense, Brittany Gordon forced a jump ball which gave possession back to the Panthers, and head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio called Stasha Carey's number out of a timeout. Carey converted on a step-through layup to give Pitt a 58-56 lead, and then Carey blocked Nelly Perry's attempt on the other end.
Carey's block went off Perry with seven seconds left, giving the ball back to Pitt. Brenna Wise was fouled and made 1-of-2 at the line, and Clemson's last second 3-pointer was no good as Pitt (10-12, 2-7 ACC) notched its second straight ACC road win, while Clemson (4-17, 0-8) remains winless in conference.
Carey finished the game with 13 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks for her third double-double of the season, while Fred Potvin added a team-high 15 point on 5-of-7 from 3-point range.
"We had a balanced scoring attack inside with Stasha and on the perimeter with Fred," McConnell-Serio said. "Our players refused to lose and continued to fight even when we got down 10 in the second half. We came up with some timely stops down the stretch and found a way to score to pull out the win."
Potvin connected on her first 3-point attempt of the game which gave Pitt a 5-4 lead, and the Panthers would hold an advantage the remainder of the quarter. Pitt was up 17-12 after the first 10 minutes of play.
Clemson though, outscored Pitt 23-12 in the second quarter and took a 35-29 lead into halftime. The Tigers scored the final seven points of the quarter to seize momentum. Kalista Walters had a team-high seven points at the break to lead the Panthers.
The Tigers scored the first four points of the second half, but the Panthers then went on a 10-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Potvin, which tied the game at 39 and forced a Clemson timeout with 5:26 left in the third.
Pitt entered the fourth quarter with a 44-43 lead, and extended the advantage to 50-46 on back-to-back 3-pointers from Potvin, but a 6-0 Clemson run gave the Tigers a 52-50 lead with 5:21 left.
A layup from Clemson's Paige Mosley with 3:01 left pushed the Tigers ahead 56-53, but that would be the final points for Clemson as Pitt finished the game by scoring the final six. Wise made 3-of-4 at the line which tied the game, and Carey's layup, plus another free throw from Wise gave Pitt the victory.
In three games since being inserted into the starting lineup, Potvin is averaging 14.3 points and has made 13-of-25 from long range. Pitt is 2-1 in those games.
Clemson was led by 16 points apiece from Nelly Perry and Paige Mosley.
The Panthers look to make it 3-of-4 on Thursday night when they return to the Petersen Events Center to host Wake Forest at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.
