Pitt Head Coach Suzie McConnell-Serio
On if attacking the paint was the game plan heading into the contest:\
“I think one of our strengths is being able to go inside with Brandi Harvey-Carr, Kalista Walters, Brenna Wise and Destinie Gibbs. The four of them, with the rotation we have, is to use the inside game. Really for us to be successful, we need a balanced attack, but we felt like we had an advantage. We would have liked to go inside even more. I thought we settled for a lot of threes, and we didn’t hit them. It was just a tough game all the way around offensively, struggling to score and trying to get things going to the basket. A good win, as always. I think we got a lot of people a lot of minutes, and as we get healthy, I will feel better about our team going into each and every game. Especially offensively, I think our struggles come from players being injured, not fully healthy and unable to play to their full potential.”
On holding the Ramblers to nine field goals, and compiling 42 rebounds:
“Coaches are never happy with everything. We’re certainly happy with only holding them to nine field goals, but they did get to the free throw line. They shot 21 free throws to our nine. We have to do a better job of finishing our defense, not fouling and not putting them on the free throw line. I thought mixing up our defense, we played some zone, we played some man with matchups, I thought our players gave us some great minutes in different combinations. Overall, it was a good win and I’ll take it, being 3-0 is very nice.”
On Kauai Bradley and her five steal performance tonight:
“Kauai [Bradley] is so active, she’s athletic and she’s long. Putting her at the top of our defense, she gets deflections and is able to come up with steals and rebound the basketball on long shots. She just has a knack for the ball. Defensively, she is a key for our defense and the success of it. Offensively, I’m still looking for her to be more aggressive scoring the basketball. She is one of our better scorers. She can shoot the three, she can get to the rim, and has a nice little mid-range game. She can score in many ways and I’m looking to bring all of it out each and every game.”
Pitt Forward Brenna Wise
On the size advantage that they had:
“I think that Brandi [Harvey-Carr] and Kalista [Walters] went to work inside. They used their size effectively. We’re going to go to them inside of the paint, especially when we have a size advantage. Once they start sinking in on us, we have shooters to kick out to as well. It’s a major key to our game.”
On how they can use these non-conference games to prepare for ACC play:
“Obviously this isn’t the ACC, but it’s treating every game like it is the ACC. It’s trying to put up more points. We only put up 59 points against this team. It’s great to hold a team to 35 [points], but at the same time you’ve got to look at it the other way. We have scorers. We want to get everyone healthy and incorporated, but right now we’re just building on that chemistry and continuing to build on the wins.”
On their defensive play:
“I think we realized that we can play the offensive side of the floor. Now, it’s taking pride on the defensive side. By limiting them to 35, great defensive play turns into great offense. That’s pretty important to us and pretty important to Coach [McConnel-Serio].”
Pitt Forward Kalista Walters
On how she’s able to find so much success coming off the bench:
“My teammates, starting with Brenna [Wise] and Brandi [Harvey-Carr], I definitely think that they set the tone. When they set the tone it’s easy for me to come in and finish what they started.”
On their offensive play:
“We definitely have a whole bunch of scorers. I truly believe that anybody on our team can have a really good night, so I think it’s just our job to figure out how we can all do it together.”
Pitt Center Brandi Harvey-Carr
On the size advantage that they had:
“We knew going into this game that they were much smaller, and that we were bigger, so we had an advantage. We just tried to go in strong and finish.”
On if going inside to her early is part of the game-plan:
“Both Brenna [Wise] and I try to go inside because we are bigger and stronger. Most of the teams that we’ve played so far have had a smaller lineup, so it’s just going in and finishing.”
On having a bigger role at Pitt than she’s had in the past:
“People have asked me if I feel pressure coming here and having a bigger role, but I love it. It’s taking me back to high school and the roles I used to have there. I actually love it.”
