Head Coach Suzie McConnell-Serio
On winning right before Thanksgiving:
“This was a game coming in that we were prepared for a different type of team since their point guard, Lexi Carpenter, out. She is a difference maker for that team in many ways. Other players in her absence had an opportunity to make plays. This game was about us. It was a great game for us. We got quality minutes for each and every player on the team. It was a great win when you are getting contributions from everyone. There was a lot of excitement on the bench throughout the game; they had a lot of fun playing this game. It is always good to get a win going into a holiday and relax the next day. Thanksgiving will be much better for everyone.”
On Pitt sharing the ball and moving it around:
“As a former point guard and as a coach, that is a statistic that I look at a lot, because of the unselfish play of our players. They are making the extra pass and finding the open player. We were efficient today. We were hitting open shots and we felt that we had the advantage inside. We were able to go to Brandi Harvey-Carr and Brenna Wise. Just getting touches on the block and being able to create high-low opportunities and scoring chances. They were very efficient throughout the course of the game. Dominating the boards was another factor for us. We wanted to be able to dominate the boards due to teams we will be facing in the ACC. The type of guards and post players that we will be playing against in the future is why we want to be able to control the boards more.”
On not dropping off in the third quarter:
“It seems that we have a stretch in the second half where we are stagnant and don’t get open shots. It becomes contagious and we try to minimize that. We did it with our defense and stayed aggressive with our man defense. We came out and tried to be disruptive and create opportunities by pressuring them and disrupting what they were trying to do. I felt we got off to a better start in the second half and didn’t have that long of stretch where we went without scoring.”
Pitt Guard Aysia Bugg
On how she was able to score so much today:
“I’m more of a pass first type of player anyway, so them making their shots opened me up. I attribute that to my teammates.”
On sharing the point guard responsibilities with freshman Jasmine Whitney:
“It’s like a load off because it’s not my original position. That’s her [Jasmine Whitney] forte, and she plays it well, so it helps that I have somebody who can share some of that load with me.”
On the team’s 5-0 start to the season:
“It’s great, especially because it’s basically a whole new team, so experience is crucial for us, and it helps us prepare for the conference.”
Pitt Guard Madison Serio
On hitting her first three-pointer as a Panther:
“After I hit the first one it definitely took a load off, and didn’t make me nervous anymore, but I have to thank my teammates for that one. They got me the ball.”
On seeing her teammates so happy to see her succeed:
“It was exciting to know that they were that happy for me and that they’re cheering me on, and also getting me the ball to get shots.”
On having to play a bigger rule with there being several injuries on the team:
“It’s new. It’s different because last year I barely played at all, but now we have eight people and we’re very limited. I just have to play my role.”
Pitt Center Brandi Harvey-Carr
On how it feels to be a focal point of the offense:
“It feels good so far, now that we’re in non-conference [play]. I feel like once they see it open up in the post that I can be able to get down and make the three open for the guards, seeing as how people are double-teaming me. I can see my options are either pick it up, or kick it out.”
