PITTSBURGH - For the second consecutive game, Pitt women's basketball (5-0, 0-0 ACC) recorded five double-figure scoring performances as the Panthers handily defeated Slippery Rock (3-2, 1-1 PSAC), 94-48, Wednesday afternoon at Petersen Events Center.
Pitt posted its third consecutive wire-to-wire win. The Panthers have not trailed since the 2:17 mark in the first quarter against Youngstown State (Nov. 14, 2016), leading for the last 152 minutes and 17 seconds of play.
The Panthers' .559 (38-of-68) field goal percentage was their best since shooting .586 (34-of-58) against Loyola Maryland on Nov. 30, 2014. Pitt held Slippery Rock to .304 from the field, while also holding the advantage in rebounds (43-24) and points in the paint (34-12). The Panthers had 32 assists - believed to be the most since a school-record 34 against Florida Atlantic on Dec. 7, 2002.
Sophomore Kalista Walters came off the bench to post the first double-double of her career with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Classmate Brenna Wise led the Panthers in scoring for the third time this year, posting a season-high 18 points. Graduate transfer center Brandi Harvey-Carr had a career-high 17 points. Junior Aysia Bugg also had 17 points, marking a season high. Sophomore Kauai Bradley rounded Pitt's double-figure scoring with 11 points. She added a six rebounds and a career-high seven assists.
The Panthers opened the game at a fast pace, going on a 9-0 run lasting the first 2:59. A 15-2 run from 7:01 to 2:18 widened the gap to 20 points, as the Panthers led 24-4. Freshman Jasmine Whitney ended scoring in the first period by making a jump shot with 29 seconds remaining to make it 28-7 in Pitt's favor.
Pitt outscored The Rock 22-9 from 8:08 to 3:01 in the second quarter to reach 31-point lead, up 52-21. Wise scored 10 of her 18 points in the second period. The Panthers finished the half with their largest halftime lead of the season, up by 32 points (58-26).
A 9-0 run extended Pitt's lead to 40 points after sophomore Madison Serio hit the first 3-pointer of her career to make it 76-36 at 2:49 in the third quarter. Serio hit two more triples, back-to-back, to bring the score to 92-45 with 1:45 remaining in the game. The Panthers reached their largest lead of the season (49) with just over a minute left when Walters scored her 10th point on a layup. The final score read 94-48 in Pitt's favor.
