Panthers Champion Six Events at Golden Flashes Gala

KENT, Ohio - The University of Pittsburgh track and field teams opened their first weekend of indoor competition by winning six different women's events on the second day of the Golden Flashes Gala, hosted by Kent State, Saturday at Kent State Field House.
At her first meet as a Panther, Quadaisha Newkirk won the women's 500m race with a time of 1:12.63. Sophomore Erin O'Connell competed in the 1,000m race for the first time in her career and won it at 3:03.47. Pitt runners took the first four places in the mile race, led by Joslin Sellers with a personal record time of 4:57.32, freshman Sam Shields in second (5:13.66), Rebecca Peters in third (5:16.83) and Erin Keelan in fourth (5:17.06). Sarah Kochinsky won the 3,000m race at 10:20.08, followed by Makenzie Zeh as runner-up (10:25.23) and Anja Weiler in third (10:34.67).
The relay team of Laila Ismail, Desiree Garland, Morgan Harvey and Newkirk championed the 4x400m at 3:48.08. Jordan Bourgeois, Nina Crawford, Danielle Leaks and Whitney Martin were runners-up at 3:53.47.
Finally, freshman Taylor Middleton won the triple jump at 12.08m. Classmate Jordan Fields came in third place with a 11.88m jump.
Notable performances on the men's side included runner-up finishes from Desmond Palmer in the 400m race (47.36) and 60m hurdles (7.96), and from Chris Spadaro in the triple jump (14.25m)
