PITTSBURGH - For the second consecutive game, freshman guard Alayna Gribble led Pitt women's basketball (6-2, 0-0 ACC) in scoring with 14 points, but the Panthers fell to Charlotte (5-3, 0-0 Conference USA), 70-63, Sunday afternoon at Petersen Events Center.
Gribble tied her career high of four made 3-pointers, matching her performance in the Panthers' last game against Purdue in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge (Nov. 30). The Pittsburgh native also contributed two assists and a blocked shot. Sophomore forward Brenna Wise was the only other Pitt player in double-figure scoring with 12 points, however, every Panther who saw playing time reached the scoring column. Freshman Jasmine Whitney was one away from her career high with 10 assists. She had just one turnover, and posted seven rebounds and four points. Sophomore Cassidy Walsh made her first appearance of 2016-17 following an ankle injury and scored four points.
Charlotte out-shot Pitt, 42.9 percent to 31.3 percent, but the Panthers had the upper hand in the rebounding column (44-37).
After nearly two scoreless minutes to start the game, Jeannette, Pa., native Ciara Gregory opened scoring for Charlotte with a layup, and Nyilah Jamison-Myers followed with a free throw to give the 49ers a 3-0 lead. Brandi Harvey-Carr was called for her second foul at the 7:02 mark and was forced to retreat to the bench. Pitt went on a 10-2 run that lasted until 4:52, but Charlotte answered with a 14-2 run of its own to take back the lead, 19-12, at the end of the first.
The 49ers extended their lead to 21-12, but the Panthers responded with a 19-0 run over 5:51 for the a 10-point advantage (31-21) at 5:33. Pitt's lead was as many as 11 (34-23) after Gribble hit a triple at 3:23. The second quarter ended with the Panthers in front, 35-28, as they outscored the 49ers 23-9.
Pitt could not sustain its momentum going into the second half, as the lead changed seven times. The Panthers led for the final time (51-50) following two free throws by Aysia Bugg at 9:47 in the fourth quarter, but a quick 7-0 spurt by the 49ers resulted in a lead that was not surrendered again. So for the second consecutive game, Pitt fell by single digits, 70-63.
