Pitt Tennis Falls to No. 33 Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Pitt tennis team suffered its first loss of the season to No. 33 Notre Dame 4-3 Friday afternoon at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.

"We had the ball in our hands to beat a very good Notre Dame team," head coach Alex Santos said. "Credit due to Notre Dame for playing better tennis than us when it really mattered. If we are able to be resilient and take our intensity to the next level, good things will happen to this group of girls."

Pacing the Panthers was junior Audrey Ann Blakely and redshirt senior Amber Washington who both collected wins in doubles and singles.

At No. 3 doubles, sophomore Callie Frey and freshman Carina Ma fell 6-3. However, junior Lolade Ogungebesan and Washington evened the doubles matches as they upset 15th-ranked Quinn Gleason and Monica Robinson, 6-4. In the deciding match, Blakely and freshman Gabriela Rezende came out with a 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point.

The Irish then claimed singles five and three, taking a 2-1 lead in the dual. Blakely would then tie it up after a dominating performance at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4.

At No. 1 singles, Ogungbesan fell to 44th-ranked Quinn Gleason, 6-4, 6-4, giving Notre Dame a 3-2 edge.

Washington then gave Pitt its last win of the day as she defeated Julie Vrabel 6-4, 2-6, 6-1.

The Irish claimed the final singles match and the dual 4-3.

The Panthers return to action Friday Feb. 19 and 20 at Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center to take on Louisville and Buffalo, respectively.
