BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Led by Chris Spadaro's personal record in the triple jump, the University of Pittsburgh men's and women's track and field teams complete action on the third and final day of the Doc Hale Elite Meet hosted by Virginia Tech at Rector Field House.
Coming off a personal record in the long jump last week, Spadaro set another personal record, this time in the triple jump, with a distance of 14.76m. He was the third collegiate finisher in the event and fifth overall, and bettered his previous career mark of 14.35m which he set last outdoor season.
Highlighting the sprints, Christopher Tate placed third in the 200 meter dash open division with a time of 21.86, which was the sixth fastest collegiate time of the day. Tate has Pitt's top 200 time of the season (21.72) which he set back in December.
"It was nice to get a preview of what we will see in a couple of weeks at our championship meet," head coach Alonzo Webb said. "Our kids held their own and it was a solid meet overall. Chris [Spadaro] has worked hard all season and he has set the tone for this team. I was really happy for him to have this type of meet. Our kids are looking forward to another competitive meet next weekend at the SPIRE."
In the relay competitions, the men's 4x400 meter relay team ran their second fastest time of the season in 3:14.47 to finish third in the invitational section. The team was comprised of Tate, Desmond Palmer, Joshua McDonald and Dustin Fuller.
The women's 4x400 meter relay team of Morgan Harvey, Jamila Branch, Whitney Martin and Sullena Staton ran a season best time of 3:49.29 which placed them second in the open division and fifth overall.
The women's 4x800 meter relay team also ran a season best as the team of Natalie Hilton (Fr.), Erin Keelan (Fr.), Erin O'Connell (Fr.) and Karli Buescher (Sr.) placed fourth overall in a time of 9:16.44. They finished behind ACC teams Wake Forest, North Carolina and Georgia Tech.
In a field of three athletes, junior Alex Archer won the 5,000 meter run in a time of 15:36.20.
The Panthers now head to the SPIRE Invitational next weekend, which will be the final meet prior to the ACC Championship Meet in Boston from February 25-27.
