PITTSBURGH - The Pitt tennis team dropped its final home match of the season, 5-2, to No. 31 Clemson Sunday afternoon at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center.
"I saw a lot of positive things today," head coach Alex Santos said. "I think we should've won the doubles point and felt that we had some really good chances in singles. Unfortunately we didn't execute the way we wanted to execute, but it is a great learning experience. The more we are put in the position to win these matches, the more experienced we will be."
Pitt finishes 6-6 when playing on its home court and drops to 7-11 overall and 1-11 against ACC opponents. The Tigers improve to 10-7 overall and 8-4 against conference opponents.
The Panthers went down fighting in doubles, as they claimed the first match on court two, 6-2. The tandem of redshirt junior Amber Washington and sophomore Callie Frey dominated Clemson's Ally Miller-Krasilniko and Tristen Dewar. At No. 3 doubles, the freshmen duo of Gabriela Rezende and Clara Lucas fell in a back-and-forth battle to Jenny Moinard and Ayan Broomfield. Rezende and Lucas worked their way to a 6-6 tied, but fell in the tiebreaker 7-2. With the doubles wins split, the point would come down to No. 1 doubles with Pitt's junior tandem of Audrey Ann Blakely and Lolade Ogungbesan. The duo trailed the majority of the match, but won three straight games to tie it 5-5. It wouldn't be enough as they dropped the last two games for a 7-5 final score.
The Tigers took a 2-0 advantage early on in singles action as Blakely fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.
Washington then cut Clemson's lead to 2-1, after posting a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 for her fifth straight win. With the victory, Washington improves to 15-2 in dual action and 10-2 against ACC opponents.
Ogungbesan fell in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 singles to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
Playing No. 6 singles, Rezende fell in three sets to Moinard. Rezende dominated in the first set, 6-3, but was blanked in the second, 6-0. Although trailing the majority of the set, Rezende won three straight games bringing the score to 5-4 in favor of Moinard. She was unable to hold off Moinard any longer, falling 6-4 to decide the dual, 4-1 Clemson.
The Tigers extended their lead to 5-1 after a victory at No. 3 singles. Frey fell in three sets to Fernanda Navarro, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native went down battling as she won three straight games, cutting Navarro's lead to 5-4. Unfortunately her efforts wouldn't be enough.
Freshman Carina Ma was the final Panther to finish this afternoon and turned in a three set victory over Ally Miller-Krasilnikov at No. 4 singles. Ma dropped the first set 7-5, but bounced back to outlast her Clemson opponent 6-2, 6-4 for the win.
The Panthers resume action Friday, April 15 at Virginia before concluding the regular season at Florida State on Sunday, April 17.
