Panthers Set for 2016 ACC Outdoor Championships

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Members of the Pitt men's and women's track and field team are set to compete in the 2016 ACC Outdoor Championships starting Friday, May 13 on the campus of Florida State at the Mike Long Track.
The Outdoor Championships are set to begin Friday with field events getting underway at 9:30 a.m., followed by the multi-events at 11:30 a.m. and the track events at 6 p.m. For the complete detailed schedule of events, visit Championship Central.
The Championships will be broadcast live on ESPN3 throughout the weekend, starting at 6 p.m. each day.
PANTHERS RANK AMONG THE BEST
Seven individual members of the men's and women's track and field team are nationally ranked in the top 95, including the men's 4x400 relay team. Of those seven, five rank in the top 48 in the eastern region.
THIS TIME LAST YEAR
At the 2015 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Pitt men finished with 37 points while the women finished with 21. The Florida State men took the title with 136 points and the Clemson women finished with 113.5 points.
Desmond Palmer took gold in the 400 hurdles with a time of 49.41. Palmer enters the weekend ranked 11th in the nation, sixth in the eastern region and second in the ACC. After his conference gold medal, Palmer went on to Eugene where he achieved First Team All-America status after placing eighth.
The men's 4x400 relay team took bronze a year ago in Tallahassee. This season, the team ranks third in the ACC after running a season-best 3:06.97 at the Virginia Challenge. Donnell Taylor, Chris Tate, Brylan Slay and Desmond Palmer are a forced to be reckoned with as they ranked 38th in the nation and
17th in the east.
HAYES SETS SCHOOL RECORD
Sophomore Kelly Hayes shattered the steeplechase school record by 17 seconds on April 1 at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival. Hayes' time of 10:22.08 surpassed Nicki Angstadt's time of 10:39.43 which she set back in 2005. Her steeplechase time is fourth-best in the conference as well as 47th best in the nation and ranks 24th in the eastern region.
