
Fourth-Quarter Surge Not Enough as Pitt Drops ACC Opener, 62-50

Rodriguez Contributes Career-High 17 Points Off Bench
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Freshman guard Pika Rodriguez contributed a career-high 17 points off the bench as Pitt women's basketball (7-6, 0-1 ACC) dropped its ACC opener at Virginia (8-6, 1-0 ACC), 62-50, Thursday night at John Paul Jones Arena.
The Hartford, Conn., native netted 6-of-10 from the field and a career best 5-of-8 from 3-point range as the Panthers' lone double-figure scorer. Junior center Kalista Walters had her second consecutive game with 10 rebounds to go along with six points.
The Panthers trailed by as many as 26 points (48-22) with 7:16 left in the third quarter but were able to make it an eight-point game (52-44) with 5:50 remaining in the fourth. Pitt out-scored the Cavaliers 17-12 in the final period.
After Yacine Diop made the first basket of the game at 9:27, the Cavaliers went on a 15-0 run that lasted until the 2:06 mark in the first quarter. The Panthers were able to scrape in six points in the final 1:25 of the period, but ended with their fewest first-quarter point total of the season, down 17-8.
Pitt cut its deficit down to six points at two instances in the second period, with the latest being 25-19 at 3:08 following a Kauai Bradley 3-pointer. Following Bradley's triple, Virginia ended the half on a 13-3 run that included three consecutive 3-pointers to secure its largest margin of the game up to that point, ahead 38-22. The score marked Pitt's largest halftime deficit of the season (previously 13 at No. 10/11 West Virginia).
The Panthers started the third quarter 0-of-8 from the field while Virginia used a 10-0 run to give Pitt its largest deficit of the season (48-22). Pitt never gave in, ending the quarter on an 11-3 run to make it 50-33 with 10 minutes remaining.
