PITTSBURGH - Junior point guard Aysia Bugg led a trio of double-figure scorers for Pitt women's basketball (13-14, 4-10 ACC) in a 71-57 road loss at Georgia Tech (15-12, 4-10 ACC) Sunday afternoon at McCamish Pavilion.
Bugg posted her second consecutive game scoring 10 or more points, recording 15 on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. Sophomore Brenna Wise followed with 13 points and six rebounds, and classmate Kalista Walters had 12 points and seven boards.
Pitt out-shot GT, 40.7 percent (22-of-54) to 39.7 percent (23-of-58), and made a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. The Yellow Jackets made 19-of-23 (82.6 percent) from the charity stripe, with a 15-of-16 mark in the fourth quarter.
After Walters opened the game with a layup, five consecutive points from GT's Francesca Pan gave the Yellow Jackets a 5-2 lead at 7:26. The Panthers responded with a 6-0 run to take back the lead, 8-5, at 6:01. Pan's second triple of the game tied things up, 8-8, at the 5:37 mark, but a jumper from Bugg put Pitt back up at 4:46. From that point, the Yellow Jackets ended the quarter on a 10-2 to end to take an 18-12 lead into the second.
GT found its largest lead of the half (23-14) after a triple by Katarina Vuckovic at 8:11 in the second. Pitt cut it down to three points after a 7-1 run lasted until 5:11 (24-21), and eventually whittled the margin to two points at two different marks, the last being when Kauai Bradley hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining to make it 34-32 at halftime.
The Yellow Jackets led by as many as five points in the third quarter, the latest mark being 45-40 at 4:46. Bugg tied the game for the third time at 47 on a layup with 2:04 left in the quarter. Elo Edeferioka hit a jumper with 00:44 left to give GT a two-point edge heading into the final stanza, 49-47.
Walters posted the game's fourth tie at 9:21 in the fourth quarter (9:21), but an 8-0 push by the Yellow Jackets put them ahead 57-49 with 5:29 to play. GT kept its momentum and reached its first double-figure lead of the game (64-54) after Imani Tilford hit two free throws with 1:05 remaining. The Panthers were forced into a fouling scenario, and the Yellow Jackets remained hot from the charity stripe hitting a total of 15-of-16 in the quarter. In the end, GT picked up the 71-57 victory.
