PITTSBURGH - In her final game at Petersen Events Center, graduate transfer Brandi Harvey-Carr had 18 points to lead Pitt women's basketball (13-16, 4-12 ACC) in a 73-57 loss to No. 20/21 Syracuse (20-9, 11-5) Sunday afternoon.
It was a busy day for the Panthers as they ended their regular season with their 10th annual "Pink The Petersen" game for breast cancer awareness. Pitt wore pink jerseys and donated a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales to Susan G. Komen Pittsburgh. More than 300 breast cancer survivors were in attendance.
Additionally, it was Senior Day for Harvey-Carr and Destinie Gibbs, as well as Alumni Day.
Harvey-Carr led a trio of double-figure scorers for Pitt, including sophomore Brenna Wise (13 points) and Jasmine Whitney (11 points). The three led the Panthers in rebounding with five boards apiece. Whitney had a team-high four assists.
Harvey-Carr posted Pitt's first six points of the game, but a 7-2 run put the Orange ahead 13-6 at 4:32 in the first quarter. The Panthers responded with a 7-2 run of their own to cut their deficit to two points, 15-13, with 2:54 remaining. A 9-0 run from Syracuse lasting until the 1:16 mark made it 24-13 in the Orange's favor, but a triple from Wise set the score at 24-16 to end the period.
The Orange reached a 14-point lead at the 6:28 mark in the second quarter after Alexis Peterson hit a 3-pointer (35-21), but a 12-0 response from Pitt made it a two-point game again (35-33) with left in the half. The Panthers held Syracuse scoreless for 5:22 and held them to an 0-of-10 streak from the field. At halftime, Pitt trailed by six, 39-33.
Neither team scored for the first two minutes of the third quarter, until Peterson made a layup at 7:56 (41-33). The Panthers made a 10-3 run to cut the margin to three points (52-49) at 1:45 to go in the third. The period ended with Pitt down seven, 56-49.
After Wise hit a 3-pointer at 9:38 in the final stanza (58-52), the Panthers went cold, falling on an 0-of-6 streak from the field. Syracuse jumped out on a 13-1 run to reach a largest lead of 18 (71-53) with 3:46 remaining. From there, the Orange maintained a double-figure lead and ultimately sealed the victory, 73-57.
