WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Sophomore forwards Brenna Wise and Kalista Walters had 16 and 15 points, respectively, to lead Pitt women's basketball (12-11, 3-7 ACC) on the road at (RV) Wake Forest (14-9, 5-5 ACC) Sunday afternoon at LJVM Coliseum.
The Panthers dropped to 0-7 in road games this season.
Wake Forest jumped out to a 4-0 start, but a quick triple by Alayna Gribble put the Panthers within one at 8:14. Pitt tied it up 5-5 on a layup by Walters at 7:10, and went without another field goal for the rest of the period and trailed by five at the first break, 14-9.
The Panthers' scoring woes continued for the first three minutes of the second quarter, until Kauai Bradley hit a 3-pointer at 7:02. That bucket kicked off a 7-0 run for Pitt, which included back-to-back jumpers by Wise and resulted in the Panthers' first lead (18-16) at the 5:00 mark. The Deacs tied the game for the third time at 4:09, but another triple from Bradley gave Pitt its largest lead of the half (21-18) at 3:26. Wake Forest outscored the Panthers 6-2 to end the period and went into the locker room with a 24-23 advantage.
Although Pitt trailed by as many as five during the first five minutes of the period, the Panthers were able to cut it to a one-point margin heading into the final quarter, down 40-39, and scored the first basket of the fourth to take a 41-40 advantage. It was Pitt's first lead since the second quarter.
The game was tied for the fourth time after a Walters layup with 4:37 to go, but a Elisa Penna jumper at 4:08 gave the Deacs a lead that they never surrendered. Alex Sharp hit Wake's first triple of the game at the 3:25 mark, and Amber Campbell made a put-back layup to give the Deacs a 50-44 lead with 2:41 to play. Pitt came as close as four points away (50-46) with 2:16 to go after another Walters layup, but WFU kept its momentum and made free throws down the stretch to win by nine, 57-48.
Wake Forest out-shot the Panthers, 39.6 percent (19-of-48) to 28.1 percent (16-of-57) and had a 40-33 advantage on the boards.
