Panthers Split Doubleheader Against SIU Edwardsville

PITTSBURGH - The University of Pittsburgh baseball team split a doubleheader with Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) Saturday evening at Charles L. Cost Field, as rain forced the Panthers and Cougars to push back their series-opening games.
The Cougars earned a 6-4 win in the opener before Pitt earned a come-from-behind victory in the second game, 7-6.
"I thought we came out flat," said head coach Joe Jordano. "Obviously we knew that SIUE could swing the bat and they certainly showed it early in the game. We did not do a very good job in game one, but all the credit goes to the Cougars. They did a great job at the plate, they played great defensively and they pitched well. So, when you look at it, it wasn't really anything that we did wrong, it was they came out and won the game.
"Overall, coming back in the second game, our backs to the wall, we're down 6-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning and we come back and win the game. In the ninth we showed some character as well. We had the heart of their lineup coming up, leadoff double and an infield hit and then we have second and third with one out and Matt [Pidich], for the first time he's been back in a couple of weeks, did a really good job for us. It's great to be back on the field, we know that we're the type of team that has to grind it out and we did it in that second ball game. We've got to flush it and come back strong tomorrow and win the series."
GAME ONE
Pitt fell to an early deficit as SIUE plated runs in the first and second innings to jump out to a 3-0 lead. A solo homer for Brock Weimer accounted for the run in the first as the two-out shot gave the Cougars a 1-0 advantage. In the second, a double and single would put men on the corners before a sacrifice bunt brought one around. A double into right by Eric Giltz scored another as the Cougars went up 3-0.
Both pitchers threw quiet third and fourth innings as Pitt starter Josh Mitchell retired nine straight following the RBI double in the second. The Panthers would take their first lead of the game in the fifth as a four-run fifth stanza pushed Pitt to a one-run lead.
P.J. DeMeo got the inning going with a single to left, moving to second on a wild pitch. A double through the left side by Nico Popa would score DeMeo, cutting SIUE's lead to 3-1. Popa would move to third on another Cougar wild pitch before Alex Amos drew a walk to put men on the corners with just one out. Continuing his hot streak, senior Jacob Wright doubled to left center, scoring Popa and putting two in scoring position. A sacrifice fly by Caleb Parry allowed Amos to score as the Panthers tied the game at 3-3.
Nick Banman took a walk as men were again on the corners. Frank Maldonado placed a well-hit single just past the glove of the shortstop, allowing Wright to score as the Panthers took a 4-3 lead.
The Cougars would answer in the sixth, as Mitchell allowed a leadoff single and the Panthers headed to the bullpen, calling on Sam Mersing. A home run to center plated two as SIUE regained the lead. After an error and a single allowed two more Cougar batters to score, Mersing would work around the jam to end the frame.
In the seventh, SIUE added an insurance run, as back-to-back singles forced Pitt to call on reliever RJ Freure. The freshman would get the first out of the inning off a groundout, but a run came across as the Cougars went up 6-4.
The Panthers threatened in the seventh, as Wright reached third with one out, but was stranded after the Cougars used three pitchers in the frame to escape the inning.
Pitt would get a baserunner in the ninth but couldn't get him around as the Cougars captured a 6-4 victory in the opener.
GAME TWO
The Cougars would again strike first in the second game after a two-run homer in the second put the visiting team up 2-0. After retiring the first four batters to open the game, a double and the subsequent homer would put the Panthers down early.
Pitt starter Josh Falk would work around a jam in the third after a dropped ball in shallow right and a walk put two on with two outs for the Cougars. Falk would rebound, using just three pitches to retire Dustin Woodcock to end the inning.
In the third the Panthers got one back, working a two-out situation to cut the lead to 2-1 in favor of the visiting team. Amos got the offense started with a double down the right field line and a walk to Wright put two on. A single into center by Parry allowed Amos to score as the lead became just one for SIUE.
Both pitchers would take control of the game over the next two frames as the scoreboard would show blanks until a four-run sixth inning by the Cougars broke things open. Two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with just one out for SIUE as a bloop single over the glove of Amos scored one to give the Cougars a 3-1 advantage.
A sacrifice fly would score another before a bases clearing double gave the Cougars a 6-1 lead.
The Panthers would get one back in the sixth as a single from Alex Griffith would lead the way for a DeMeo double, as Pitt cut the lead to 6-2.
Pitt's offense came alive in the seventh, as five runs would come across to give the home team the advantage. Pazos opened things up with a double, as two men would reach following a hit by pitch off the leg of Chentouf. A perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Amos moved both men into scoring position before a bases clearing double by Wright scored the pair.
Wright would move to third as Parry grounded out to the shortstop and the left fielder would come around on a wild pitch, cutting the SIUE lead to just one. A single by Banman put a man on for Maldonado who cranked a deep shot over the wall in left, giving the Panthers a 7-6 lead.
Reliever Matt Pidich, who took over for Falk in the seventh rolled in the opening two frames, retiring all six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth. The redshirt junior would allow a leadoff double and a single in the ninth, as both runners would move into scoring position following a groundout. Pidich would show his grit, however, as he was able to get the next three batters to ground out without advancing the runners as Pitt held on for a 7-6 victory.
