PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team will compete in its first East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) meet of the season at the Fitzgerald Field House this weekend against New Hampshire.

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team will compete in its first East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) meet of the season at the Fitzgerald Field House this weekend against New Hampshire.
THE MEET
- Pitt (0-1) will face the New Hampshire Wildcats (2-2, 1-0 EAGL) Saturday, Jan. 20 in Pittsburgh at the Fitzgerald Field House. Action is set to begin at 2 p.m. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.

THE SERIES
- Pitt will square off against New Hampshire for the 69th time in program history, with the Wildcats holding the all-time series edge over the Panthers, 50-18.
- New Hampshire came out with a 195.425-191.675 victory over Pitt when the two teams last met during regular season action January 21, 2017.
- The series has been much closer as of late, with the two programs splitting the last 10 matchups.
SCOUTING NEW HAMPSHIRE
- New Hampshire is 2-2 on the season after competing in a dual meet against Bridgeport. The Wildcats to the Purple Knights, 192.950-191.750.
- UNH has a good balance of youth and veteran leadership, as the roster is comprised of five freshman, four sophomores, eight juniors and five seniors.
- New Hampshire is led by senior co-captains Casey Lauter and Makenzie Kerouac. Lauter was an All-EAGL First Team member on vault in 2017. Kerouac missed last season due to injury, but was an All-EAGL First Team pick on bars in 2016.
RECORD BREAKING SEASON OPENER
- Despite falling to Oregon State, 194.850-194.125, in their season opener, the Panthers captured a program record for the highest season-opening total at 194.125. The previous record was set in 2012, when Pitt scored a 193.850 in a dual meet against Maryland.
- The Panthers posted their best event score on floor, earning a mark of 48.950, while following with a 48.700 on vault. On bars the squad finished with a 48.650 and earned a mark of 47.825 on beam.
- Pitt saw action from 12 of its gymnasts, with two Panthers collecting individual event titles. The Panthers' freshman Haley Brechwald won vault outright and tied for the all-around title. Brechwald and senior transfer Catie Conrad were also a part of a four-way tie for first on bars.
BRECHWALD TABBED EAGL ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
- Pitt freshman Haley Brechwald was tabbed EAGL Rookie of the Week following a phenomenal debut with the Panthers.
- Brechwald earned an outright title on vault, while tying for first place on bars and in the all-around. She posted or tied for the highest score in every event for the Panthers besides beam.
CONRAD OFFICIALLY BEGINS PANTHER CAREER
- Senior Eastern Michigan transfer Catie Conrad competed in her first meet with Pitt last Saturday.
- Conrad posted a 9.525 on vault, a 9.725 on floor, tied a team-high on bars at 9.775 and scored a team-high 9.775 on beam for an all-around score of 38.800.
KENSLEIGH'S COMEBACK
- Junior Kensleigh Owens returned to action after not competing in 2017.
- Owens posted a career-high 9.775 on vault for a second-place finish, while also performing on floor for the first time in her career, where she scored a 9.800.
SNIDER HEADS NEW STAFF
- Samantha Snider was named the head coach of the Pitt gymnastics team this past June, becoming just the third head coach in program history.
- Prior to Pitt, Snider spent the past nine seasons at the University of Arkansas in various roles and was named the 2016 NACGC/W South Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
- Shortly after her hiring, Snider announced the addition of Dave Kuzara and Ryan Snider to the coaching staff. Kuzara comes to Pittsburgh from Michigan where he previously served as an assistant coach. Ryan Snider served as a volunteer assistant coach also at the University of Arkansas.
UP NEXT
- Pitt will head to East Lansing, Mich., where they will face Michigan State, Eastern Michigan and Rutgers in a quad meet Saturday, Jan. 27.
