PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team will compete in its first quad meet of the season against Michigan State, Eastern Michigan and Rutgers this weekend at the Jenison Field House in East Lansing, Mich.

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh gymnastics team will compete in its first quad meet of the season against Michigan State, Eastern Michigan and Rutgers this weekend at the Jenison Field House in East Lansing, Mich.
THE MEET
- Pitt (1-1, 1-0 EAGL) will face the Spartans (0-3, 0-2 B1G), Eagles (0-3, 0-2 MAC) and Scarlet Knights (1-3, 0-2 B1G) Saturday, Jan. 27. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Panthers posted the third highest team score in program history in a 196.225-195.175 win against New Hampshire Saturday, Jan. 20 in the team's first EAGL meet of the season.
- The Panthers broke the program record on bars with a 49.275 and tied the program record on beam with a 49.125. Pitt also posted a 48.975 on floor and a 48.850 on vault.
- Four Pitt gymnasts collected individual titles in the meet. Freshman Haley Brechwald tied on bars, while winning floor and the all-around title outright. Senior Catie Conrad tied on bars and beam, while sophomore Alecia Petrikis won vault and junior Lucy Brett tied on bars.
PITT VERSUS MICHIGAN STATE
- Pitt will face Michigan State for the 28th time in program history, with the Spartans controlling the all-time series with a 21-6 advantage.
- The Panthers won their last meeting against Michigan State, recording a 195.375-194.600 victory March 3, 2017.
- Pitt and the Spartans have split their past four matchups.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE
- Michigan State is 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in Big Ten competition. Most recently, the Spartans fell to Minnesota, 196.075-194.925, Saturday Jan. 20.
- The Spartans roster is comprised of seven freshman, two sophomores, five juniors and four seniors.
- Junior Roya Shirley leads the team in three events with a season average of 9.817 on floor, 9.733 on beam and 9.725 on vault. Senior Hailee Westney leads the team on bars with a season average score of 9.850.
PITT VERSUS EASTERN MICHIGAN
- The Panthers will square off against Eastern Michigan for the 12th time in program history, with the Eagles holding the all-time series edge over Pitt, 7-4.
- EMU came out with a 196.225-194.200 victory when the two teams last met March 5, 2017.
- The Eagles have won the past three meetings against the Panthers.
SCOUTING EASTERN MICHIGAN
- Eastern Michigan is 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in MAC action. Most recently, the Eagles lost to Bowling Green, 195.025-193.950, Friday Jan. 19.
- The Eagles roster is comprised of seven freshman, two sophomores, three juniors and five seniors.
- Redshirt senior Lacey Rubin leads the team in two events with a season average of 9.817 on bars and 9.733 on beam. Sophomore Emili Dobronics leads the team on floor with a season average score of 9.792 and senior Kendall Valentin leads the team on vault with a 9.783.
PITT VERSUS RUTGERS
- Pitt will matchup against Rutgers for the 51st time in program history, with the Panthers owning the all-time series edge against the Scarlet Knights, 32-18.
- Rutgers defeated Pitt in their last contest, recording a 193.550-193.100 victory January 30, 2016.
- The Panthers have recorded 14 wins in their past 21 meetings with Rutgers.
SCOUTING RUTGERS
- Rutgers is 1-3 on the season and 0-2 in Big Ten competition. Most recently, the Scarlet Knights fell to Nebraska, 196.300-192.975, Saturday Jan. 20.
- The Scarlet Knights roster is comprised of five freshman, seven sophomores, four juniors and three seniors.
- Freshman Belle Huang leads the team in two events with a season average of 9.838 on beam and 9.650 on vault. Senior Libby Groden leads the team on bars with a season average mark of 9.787 and freshman Toni Williams leads the team on floor with a season average of 9.775.
SETTING THE BAR HIGH
- The Panthers set the program record on bars in their meet against New Hampshire Saturday, Jan. 20.
- The team recorded a 49.275, breaking the previous record of 49.200 set by the 1999 Pitt squad.
TEAM TIES BEAM RECORD
- Pitt tied the program record on beam in its contest against New Hampshire, Saturday, Jan. 20.
- The Panthers posted a 49.125, a feat only the 2003 and 2004 Pitt teams previously accomplished.
A FRESHMAN TO FEAR
- Pitt freshman Haley Brechwald received EAGL Rookie of the Week honors for the second-consecutive time after continuing her strong start to the season against New Hampshire Saturday, Jan. 20.
- Brechwald has collected six individual titles through two meets. Against the Wildcats, she took home the bars, floor and all-around title against the Wildcats. Against Oregon State, she won vault, bars and the all-around title.
- Brechwald is currently averaging scores of 9.863 on floor, 9.825 on bars, 9.787 on vault and 9.638 on beam for an all-around average of 39.112.
PITT, MICHIGAN CONNECTION
- The Panthers have three gymnasts who's hometown is within a two hour radius of East Lansing, Mich. in freshman Sophie Bochenek, sophomore Lucy Jones and senior Catie Conrad.
CONRAD FACES FORMER TEAM
- Senior transfer Catie Conrad will face her former team Saturday in Eastern Michigan.
- Conrad spent her first three years with the Eagles, where she was a two-time Second Team All-MAC honoree and a two-time member of the All-Tournament Team.
REVISITING ROWE'S PANTHER PAST
- Before leaving for Michigan State in 2014, head coach Mike Rowe served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the Pitt gymnastics team under Debbie Yohman for nine seasons. With the Panthers, Rowe's primary coaching focus was bars.
- During his nine-year tenure, Rowe was a two-time Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year and coached two EAGL bar champions, three EAGL Rookies of the Year and multiple NCAA regional qualifiers on bars.
- Former Panther gymnast Brittney Harris was added to the MSU staff as an assistant coach Aug. 17, 2017.
- During her senior season at Pitt in 2014, Harris earned First-Team All-EAGL and First-Team All-Tournament honors on the way to qualifying for the NCAA Regional Championships as an all-arounder.
- Michigan State head coach Mike Rowe was a part of Pitt's staff during Harris' time with the Panthers.
- Pitt will return home for a quad meet against NC State, Towson and Temple Saturday Feb. 3 at the Fitzgerald Field House.
