Well-Rounded Effort Leads Panthers to Victory
NASHVILLE – The University of Pittsburgh women's basketball team returned to the win column Saturday night after recording a 61-54 win over Arkansas at the Challenge in Music City round-robin tournament held at the Nashville Municipal Auditorium.
With the win, Pitt moves to 3-4, while the Razorbacks suffer their second loss of the year for a 3-2 record.
The Panthers finished the game leading in numerous statistical categories, including field goals made (25-19), rebounds (48-40), assists (17-11), points in the paint (42-22) and bench points (24-17).
"I'm really proud of our team tonight," said head coach Lance White. "Getting a win over an SEC team is huge for the growth of our program. I thought down the stretch we had players really step up and do what was needed to get the win."
Pitt's offensive charge was led by seniors Kalista Walters and Danielle Garven. Walters finished with a season-high 13 points and Garven recorded 12 points for her fourth double-digit scoring game this season. Sophomore Cara Judkins finished with eight points, while three other Panthers finished with six points on the night.
Pitt dominated the Razorbacks on the glass, pulling down 48 total. Three Panthers recorded seven points apiece, as well as three others grabbing four each.

The second quarter was low scoring as both teams put up just eight points through 10 minutes. However, the Panthers continued to build on their lead as they headed to the locker room with a 25-18 advantage after Whitney blocked an attempted Arkansas three-pointer as time expired.
It was all Pitt in the third quarter as they were outscoring the Razorbacks 12-5 with 4:34 remaining. Arkansas then knocked down back-to-back three's cutting the Panthers' lead to 37-30 with 3:34 to go. However, a three-pointer and layup by Nelson would get Pitt back on track as the squad concluded the third with a 46-38 lead.
The Razorbacks began to chip away at the Panthers' lead in the final frame, cutting it to 55-52 with 3:06 to play. But, Pitt continued to push, going on an 8-2 run over the final 2:10 to secure the win.
