Diop Posts Seventh Double-Double as Pitt Falls to Orange, 62-53

Junior Leads Panthers with 16 Points, 12 Rebounds
PITTSBURGH – Redshirt junior Yacine Diop posted her seventh double-double of the season with game highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds for Pitt women's basketball (10-17, 2-12 ACC) in a 62-53 loss to Syracuse (20-7, 8-6 ACC) Monday night at Petersen Events Center.
Diop made 8-of-16 from the floor and 11 of her 12 rebounds were on the defensive end. She added four steals and a block. The Dakar, Senegal, native led a trio of double-figure scorers for the Panthers, including sophomore guards Alayna Gribble and Jasmine Whitney with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Junior center Kalista Walters contributed eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks.
The Orange won the rebounding battle, 40-34, and made 17-of-19 from the free throw line to Pitt's 6-of-9. The Panthers had a better day from the field, shooting 38.9 percent (21-of-54) to Syracuse's 33.9 percent (19-of-56). Pitt had 18 assists on 21 made field goals.
The teams kept it close in the first quarter as neither squad led by more than three points with three lead changes and three ties. Junior Kauai Bradley hit a 3-pointer to give Pitt a 9-8 lead with 2:04 remaining in the frame, but the Orange answered with two layups to end the quarter up 12-9.
Syracuse opened the second quarter with back-to-back triples to reach its largest lead of the half (18-9) at 9:09. Pitt answered with a 5-0 run over the next minute to keep the game in single digits (18-14) at 8:04. The Panthers cut it to a two-point margin at halftime (25-23) following a 6-0 run, with four points coming from Walters.
Diop tied the game for the fourth time (25-25) with a jumper to open the third quarter at 9:13. The lead changed twice with just over seven minutes to go in the period, but after a layup by Syracuse's Tiana Mangakahia at 4:37, the Orange retained its advantage (33-30) for the remainder of the game. The Panthers trailed by eight (42-34) entering the final stanza.
Over the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, Syracuse used back-to-back triples from Isis Young and Miranda Drummond to secure its first double-figure lead (49-39) with 5:07 left in the game. The Orange pushed its margin to as many as 12 (55-43) with 2:16 left in the game, following a layup by Mangakahia. Pitt fought until the end, outscoring Syracuse 10-7 over the final two minutes, but was unable to close the gap and fell, 62-53.
