Panthers to Face Wake Forest in ACC Tournament First Round Wednesday
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Redshirt junior Yacine Diop and sophomore Jasmine Whitney combined for 34 points in the regular season finale for Pitt women's basketball (10-19, 2-14) – an 81-49 loss at No. 4/5 Louisville (29-2, 15-1) – Sunday at KFC Yum! Center.
The Cardinals secured a share of the ACC regular season title and a No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament with the win. Pitt is the No. 14 seed and will take on No. 11 seed Wake Forest in the first round Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. The Panthers dropped this season's meeting with the Demon Deacons, 58-49, at Petersen Events Center (Jan. 4).
Diop led seven Panther scorers with 18 points, and Whitney contributed 16. In a starting role, junior Danielle Garven scored eight points, pulled down three rebounds and had three blocks.
The Panthers trailed by as many as 12 in the first quarter (18-6), following a 10-0 Louisville run from 6:24 until 3:21. Pitt outscored the Cardinals 6-2 over the final three minutes of the first frame to make it 20-12 at the first intermission. Diop and Whitney had four points apiece in the quarter.
Louisville opened the second quarter on a 14-2 run to reach its largest lead of the half (34-14) with 5:37 before halftime. Junior Asia Durr and senior Myisha Hines-Allen combined for 12 of the 14 points. The Panthers answered with a 6-0 run from 5:20 to 2:42, with three points from Diop, to cut their deficit to 34-20. The Cardinals outscored Pitt 4-2 over the final two minutes to take a 38-22 lead into the locker room. Diop ended the half with nine points, leading six Panthers who had reached the scoring column.
Following a 6-0 Cards run to begin the third quarter, Pitt surged on a 14-4 run that lasted until the 3:18 mark when it cut the margin to 12 points (48-36). Garven had six points for the Panthers during the stretch. However, Louisville erased Pitt's run with a 13-3 output of its own, which Durr capped with a 3-pointer at the third period horn, to put the Cards back ahead by 22 (61-39).
Three consecutive points from Whitney on a jumper (61-41, 9:51) and a free throw (61-42, 9:06) at the beginning of the fourth shortened the margin to 19, but that was as close as the Panthers came to Louisville for the remainder of the game. The Cardinals closed the game on a 12-0 run to secure their largest lead of the contest (32), as well as a share of the ACC regular season title, with the final score at 81-49.
