Pitt Falls to National Powerhouse Horned Frogs
FORT WORTH, TEXAS – The University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team's unbeaten streak came to an end at national powerhouse TCU Thursday evening, as the Panthers (3-1-1) fell on the road 4-0.
"Tonight was disappointing with regard to how we played," said head coach Randy Waldrum. "In terms of the loss, I understand and can accept that, as we grow, we will lose some games along the way. The disappointing part was that we came out nervous and lacking a competitive spirit and that is the part that is unacceptable."
"Kat Robinson came in and gave us a solid performance in her debut, and Jules Vazquez played well. Unfortunately, we need more good performances against quality competition like TCU. We will get back on track and learn from this experience. That's the way you get better, learning from mistakes. I believe in our players and I know they'll put in the work needed."
TCU got on the board first, converting a penalty kick in the 16th minute to grab a 1-0 advantage. The Horned Frogs would add to their advantage as the minutes ticked off in the first half, scoring in the 42nd minute to take a 2-0 lead at the break.
In the 64th minute, TCU would take a 3-0 lead on a shot from 12 yards out. The Horned Frogs captured a 4-0 advantage they wouldn't surrender in the final minutes of the game.
Amaia Pena tended net in the first half, tallying four saves and allowing two goals. Freshman Katherine Robinson would make her collegiate debut in the second half, recording three saves.
Offensively, Dixon Veltri tallied a pair of shots, while Celia Lopez, Mikayla Schmidt and Bethany Rasile added one. Pitt forced TCU keeper Katie Lund to make four saves as the Panthers were shut out for the first time all season.
The Panthers will return to action Sunday, taking on North Texas at 1 p.m. EST in the finale of the Texas road swing at North Texas.
