Panthers Win Second Straight City Game
PITTSBURGH – A pair of goals from freshman Madeline Gravante led the University of Pittsburgh women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over cross-town rival Duquesne Thursday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
"It's always good to play at home, that's for sure and we had a great crowd tonight again," said head coach Randy Waldrum. "We had two tough games on the road and we knew coming in here that Duquesne was off to a good start and we knew it would be a difficult game because it's a cross-town rival, so performing the way we did is obviously the important thing for us because we're trying to build the way we play. I thought today was probably our best overall 90 minutes of performance that we've had so far. I'm really just proud of the girls and how they came back and responded after the weekend we had in Texas."
Gravante would give the Panthers (4-2-1) the early lead, netting her first collegiate goal in the sixth minute as Ari Morgan and Mikayla Alcorn tallied the assists.
The Panthers would enter the half with the 1-0 lead as Duquesne owned a 5-3 shot advantage through the opening 45 minutes.
Gravante increased Pitt's lead in the second half, scoring her second of the game in the 73rd minute, connecting off a corner by Juliana Vazquez.
The Panthers and the Dukes finished even with six shots each, with Gravante (3) leading the way, with Mikayla Schmidt, Mikayla Alcorn and Mariona Segales each adding one.
Keeper Amaia Pena played all 90 minutes, tallying three saves in her second shutout of the season.
Pitt continues its homestand Sunday, hosting No. 16 Kansas at Ambrose Urbanic Field at 1 p.m.
