Panthers Clinch Doubles Point En Route to Victory
WEXFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh tennis team returned to the win column Saturday afternoon after defeating Bowling Green, 5-2, at the Oxford Athletic Club.
With the win, Pitt moves to 4-4 overall, while the Falcons also move to 4-4 on the year.
The Panthers clinched the doubles point and earned four singles victories on the day.
"I think that we did a very good job in doubles with being vocal and positive," said assist coach Filip Vittek. "We may not have played our best tennis, but we were very vocal and energetic, which I think helped us a lot to get the doubles point. We had the momentum going into singles and we were able to capitalize on most of the courts. Overall, it was a very positive day and a great win against a good team."
The Panthers got on the board first, clinching the doubles point after back-to-back wins on courts one and two. Senior Gabriela Rezende and sophomore Claudia Bartolome turned in the first win on court one, defeating their Bowling Green opponents, 6-4. Soon after, courts two and three were tied 5-5. The senior tandem of Luisa Varon and Natsumi Okamoto continued their comeback to win it, 7-5.
Moving to singles, Bartolome turned in the first win of the day as she cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles for her 11th win of the year.
Bowling Green got its first point on the board after sophomore Camila Moreno fell in straight sets, 1-6, 4-6, on court three.
Varon added Pitt's third team point of the day after picking up her third win at the No. 2 spot. The senior dominated Polina Radeva in the first set, 6-1, and worked her way to a 7-5 second set victory.
Rezende then returned to the win column after collecting a hard fought victory at No. 4 singles, clinching the dual for the Panthers, 4-1. Facing Ayumi Sasaki, Rezende dominated in the first set, 6-2, and won the second, 6-4.
Okamoto added Pitt's fourth and final win of the day as she won in three sets on court six. The senior downed Marta Bettinelli in the first set, 6-1, fell in the second 2-6, and bounced back to take the third, 6-3.
The Falcons claimed the final match of the day on court five as freshman Mariona Perez Noguera fell in three sets to Vanesa Pardo.
The Panthers resume action Friday, Feb. 22 when they host Virginia Tech at Noon at the Oxford Athletic Club. The conference match opens up a four-game stretch of ACC opponents for Pitt.
