Washington Jr. Collects Six RBI as Panthers Even Series
Pitt (8-17, 2-9 ACC) used 12 hits to plate 11 runs, as Ron Washington Jr. collected six RBI in the Panthers' second ACC victory of the season.
"This win does a lot for our confidence," said head coach Mike Bell. "When you're building a culture and building a program, I've told them from the beginning, our objective is to win a series. Even after a Friday night loss, we still have our objective in front of us. We don't put our heads down, we're not going to feel sorry for ourselves. We know we have to earn it. They went out and earned a victory today. They still have their objective, and that is to win a series tomorrow."
Pitt put the pressure on early, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the opening frame as Connor Perry connected on his third homer of the series and eighth of the season. Miami would tie things up in the second on an RBI double.
The Panthers would regain the lead in the bottom of the frame, as a bunt single from Bryce O'Farrell gave the home team a 2-1 advantage. Pitt would add to its lead in the third as Washington Jr. connected on his first double of the game, scoring Perry, who had reached on a one-out single.
Miami cut the lead to just one in the fourth, scoring a run after a misplay in the infield. Pitt would respond, however, plating three to jump out to a 6-2 advantage through four. With two outs and Sky Duff on first, Cole MacLaren would reach after being struck by a pitch and the Panthers would load the bases on a walk to Perry. Washington Jr.'s second double of the outing would clear the bases as Pitt took a four-run advantage.
Both offenses would continue to roll, as Miami scored two in the fifth, answered by a run from the Panthers in the bottom of the frame on an RBI walk to Perry, as things sat at 7-4 in favor of the Panthers through five.
The Hurricanes would take control of the game in the sixth, as the visitors scored five, taking a 9-7 lead.
The Panther offense continued to show its tenacity in the seventh, scoring four to regain the lead. Back-to-back singles from Gregory Ryan Jr. and Duff put a pair on, as MacLaren would loop one through the left side to score Ryan Jr. and force a Miami pitching change. A walk to Perry would load the bases with no outs, before a balk brought Duff around.
Pitt kept the heat on as Washington Jr. ripped his third double of the game into right, scoring both runners and giving Pitt an 11-9 advantage.
The Hurricanes wouldn't go quietly, though, mounting a ninth inning charge to keep things alive. A one-out solo homer cut the lead to just one as two singles and a walk would load things up with two outs. Reliever Christian Camacho would induce a ground ball, fielded cleanly from David Yanni and tossed to O'Farrell, as Pitt earned the 11-10 victory.
Offensively, Washington Jr. was impressive, going 3-5 with six RBI. His three doubles mark the first time a Panther batter has collected three or more doubles in a game since Frank Maldonado tallied three against Kansas State on Feb. 18, 2017. His six RBI are the most since Caleb Parry recorded six against Maryland Eastern Shore on May 3, 2017. Perry continued his hot streak, connecting on his third homer of the series, going 2-4 with two RBI and four runs scored, drawing three walks.
Starter Dan Hammer went 5.1 innings, striking out four in the process. Freshman Brady Devereux (1-0) earned his first career victory, going 2.0 innings, allowing two runs off two hits and one walk, striking out one. Camacho earned his first save, tossing 1.2 frames, allowing one run off four hits and one walk, striking out a pair.
The Panthers and Hurricanes will conclude the series Sunday afternoon in the rubber match, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
