
Panthers Knock Off Duquesne In City Game, 69-64; Improve To 4-0 On The Year

PITTSBURGH – Behind a strong fourth quarter effort, the Pitt women's basketball team (4-0, 0-0 ACC) stayed perfect on the year as they claimed the 69-64 victory in the 39th edition of the City Game against Duquesne Saturday night inside the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse. With the win, the Panthers are 4-0 for the first time since 2016-17.
Pitt had three players score in double figures led by senior Jayla Everett with 18 points including her 1,000th career point in the victory. Everett finished off her impressive night with 18 points, a season-high six rebounds, two assists and a steal while going 4-of-9 from behind the arc in the road victory. Junior Amber Brown had her best scoring night of the season as she netted 14 points, four rebounds and two assists on 5-of-10 from the floor while Liatu King came off the bench and provided the Panthers with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds in the win.
Leading by five, 62-57, with under four minutes to go in the game, the Panthers relied on their defense and a pair of timely buckets by Everett and Rita Igbokwe to close the door on any potential comeback for the Dukes. Pitt made a couple free throws down the stretch to secure their first road victory of the season, 69-64.
The Dukes opened the scoring in the first with a triple but Destiny Strother responded right away with a three of her own to tie the game in the early going. Duquesne took the 7-5 lead after a pair of free throws but Emy Hayford finished off a three-point play and Brown finished a fast break layup to give Pitt the 12-9 lead. The Dukes were able to outscore Pitt 14-7 down the stretch of the opening quarter to take the 23-19 lead into the second.
Duquesne opened the second with two straight layups to take the 27-19 lead but Pitt fought back as King notched two buckets and Strother connected on a triple to tie the game, 27-27, three minutes in. The two sides went back-and-forth across the final five minutes of the second as Everett led the Pitt scoring attack with the final eight points of the half to send the game to the locker room tied, 35-35.
The two squads went back-and-forth to start the third quarter as Duquesne scored the first five points before Brown connected on two free throws and Strother nailed her third triple of the game to tie the game, 40-40. After the media timeout, the Dukes pushed their lead to four, 47-43, but Pitt was able to score five straight to regain the lead as Dayshanette Harris hit a pair of free throws and Brown finished off a layup in traffic making it 48-47 with under a minute to go. The Dukes hit a triple to end the scoring in the quarter as they entered the fourth clinging to the 50-48 lead.
The fourth quarter opened up with an Everett triple followed by a free throw from Mary Dunn and back-to-back layups from King and Brown to force the Dukes into a timeout, trailing Pitt 56-50. Duquesne hit a three out of the timeout but Pitt responded as Brown finished off back-to-back layups as Everett made a nice feed on the first to lead her right to the basket uncontested, pushing the Pitt lead to 60-53. Down the stretch, the Dukes weren't able to get any closer than five as the Panthers claimed their fourth straight win to start the season.
Making her second straight start, Strother provided Pitt with nine points and a career-high eight rebounds while Dunn finished off her night with six points and three rebounds off the bench. Hayford went for four points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals while Igbokwe grabbed six rebounds and two blocks and Harris dished out a team-high four assists.
As a team, Pitt won the rebounding battle 49-40 while also outscoring the Dukes in the paint 26-20 on the night. The Panthers forced 13 Duquesne turnovers and scored 19 points off of the chances while outscoring the Dukes 18-3 in fast break points.
The Dukes were led offensively by Fatou Pouye who netted 17 points and six rebounds while Libby Bazelak had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists in the loss.

- The Panthers will hit the road for three games at the Paradise Jam in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Panthers open the tournament on Thursday, Nov. 25 against nationally-ranked Texas A&M before playing Northwestern on Friday, Nov. 26 and South Dakota on Saturday, Nov. 27.
