
Pitt Drops Heartbreaker In Overtime To South Dakota, 72-61

ST. THOMAS, USVI – Playing their first overtime game of the season, the Panthers ran out of gas late as they fell to South Dakota by the score of 72-61. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 5-2 on the season and go 1-2 at the Paradise Jam.
Dayshanette Harris hit a huge shot for the Panthers with 1:20 left in the fourth quarter as she netted a contested triple as the shot clock expired to give Pitt the 54-51 lead. The Coyotes responded with five straight points to take the 56-54 lead with 12.4 seconds to play but Liatu King was able to send the game to overtime as she snagged an offensive rebound and finished off the layup to make it 56-56. After a stop by the Pitt defense, the two sides went to overtime where the Coyotes outscored Pitt 16-5 to take the victory.
Harris led the Panthers with 18 points, three rebounds and two steals across a season-high 22 minutes of work while Mary Dunn came off the bench and provided Pitt with 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
The Panthers got out to a great start thanks to junior Destiny Strother who knocked down a triple to open the scoring before finishing off a layup after a great feed from Emy Hayford to give Pitt the 6-0 lead just over two minutes in. Harris was then able to score back-to-back buckets to give Pitt the 10-7 lead before the Coyotes hit a pair of free throws to cut the Pitt lead to one. The Panthers then ended the quarter on a 8-0 thanks to a triple from Dunn and a fast break layup by Hayford as Pitt took the 18-9 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter was a low scoring one for both sides as the Coyotes were able to outscore Pitt 13-9. The Panthers got out to a nine-point lead as Rita Igbokwe knocked down a turnaround jumper and Maliyah Johnson finished off a layup after an offensive rebound to make it 24-13. South Dakota used a 6-2 run to get back into the game before Harris raced down the court and finished a layup to make it 28-19. The Coyotes ended the half with three straight to send the game to the locker room with Pitt leading 28-22.
The Coyotes came out of the locker room with some energy as they took the 32-30 lead after a 10-2 run to force Pitt into a timeout. Out of the timeout, Harris started to get hot as she finished off a layup before earning a steal and fast break layup to make the score 34-33 in favor of the Panthers. After some back-and-forth play, Sandrine Clesca finished off a layup and free throw to extend the Pitt lead to four, 39-35, with two minutes left in the third. The Coyotes tied the game, 41-41, with a triple but Igbokwe finished off a layup and free throw to give the Panthers the lead back, 44-41. South Dakota finished the scoring with a three to send the game to the fourth tied, 44-44.
The fourth quarter was tightly contested on both sides as Pitt was able to regain the 49-48 lead after an offensive rebound and layup from Dunn. With the score tied at 51, Harris hit her biggest shot of the night as she buried a triple from the left corner as the shot clock expired to give Pitt the 54-51 lead with just over a minute to play. The Coyotes responded with five straight to take the 56-54 before King finished off a layup to send the game to overtime tied, 56-56.
In overtime, the Coyotes were able to knock down a pair of triples early and never looked back as they cruised to the 72-61 victory.
Taisha Exanor came off the bench and scored a season-high seven points, three steals and two rebounds while Igbokwe finished off her night with seven points and eight boards in the loss. King finished with five rebounds as she wrapped up the three-game tournament with 43 total rebounds (14.3 rpg).
As a team, Pitt was outrebounded 47-41 while they shot just 33.9% from the floor. The Panthers recorded 10 steals in the loss.
South Dakota was led offensively by Chloe Lamb who netted a career-high 30 points while Maddie Krull added 12 points and nine boards in the win.
