Pitt Heads South To Take On Clemson Thursday Night

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team (10-9, 1-7 ACC) returns to action Thursday night as they head down to Clemson to take on the Tigers at 7:00 pm on the ACC Network Extra.

- This meeting marks the 17th between the two teams with each team winning eight games in the series.
- Pitt has won two straight in the series, downing the Tigers in both games last season.
- Clemson holds the 4-3 edge in games played in Clemson but the Panthers have won three of the last four in South Carolina.
- Clemson enters Thursday's game with a 7-12 overall record and a 1-7 ACC mark. They lost at Florida State, 75-70, last time out.
- The Tigers are led offensively by fifth-year guard Delicia Washington who is averaging a team-high 14.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.9 steals while shooting 46.2% from the floor.
- Amari Robinson is enjoying a strong season as she is averaging 10.4 points and 6.1 rebounds while also leading the squad with 54 offensive boards.
- As a team, the Tigers are averaging 63.9 points per game while allowing 67.7 points per game. They are shooting 39.4% from the floor (12th in the ACC) and 27.4% from behind the arc (14th in the ACC).
- Clemson is turning the ball over 17.9 times per game while forcing 18.3 turnovers/game by their opponents.
- The Panthers and Tigers met twice last season with Pitt collecting both victories.
- Pitt earned the 79-69 road victory Clemson on Jan. 26, 2021 to secure their first sweep over an ACC opponent in a season since joining the conference.
- The Panthers had four players score in double figures in the win led by a pair of bench players. Liatu King finished off her night with 15 points and eight rebounds while Destiny Strother netted 15 points on 6-of-8 from the floor.
- As a team, Pitt dominated the paint as they outscored the Tigers 40-26 while their bench also dominated, posting 39 points to just 19 by Clemson.
- Pitt forced 22 Clemson turnovers in the win while they only coughed the ball up nine times. The Panthers also scored 14 points off of those turnovers.
- The Panthers have continued to put an emphasis on rebounding the basketball and it has paid off in a major way. Pitt currently ranks 11th in the NCAA in rebounds per game (44.1) and 7th in total rebounds (838). The Panthers have recorded at least 35 rebounds in 19 straight games to start the season, a new program record.
- Pitt has been able to get to the free throw line at a high rate as they rank 4th in the NCAA in free throw attempts (398) while ranking 31st in free throws made (252). Junior Amber Brown leads the ACC and ranks 30th in the NCAA in free throw attempts (100).
- The Panthers hit the road for Clemson Thursday night for a game on the ACC Network at 7:00 pm.
- Junior center Rita Igbokwe has continued to mature into one of the most feared presences down low in the ACC. Last time out, Igbokwe recorded five blocks against Notre Dame which marked her third game this season with at least five blocked shots. She is currently riding a 12-game block streak, the longest in the ACC.
- Last week, junior Dayshanette Harris became the quickest player in program history (60 games) to record at least 700 points, 250 rebounds and 175 assists.
- The Panthers were within four early in the fourth quarter Sunday against #19 Notre Dame but they closed the game going just 1-for-12 from the floor as the Irish earned the 77-63 victory.
- Jayla Everett led the Panthers with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block while Destiny Strother netted 14 points off the bench in the loss.
- Dayshanette Harris scored in double figures (12) for the fifth straight game while adding five assists. Rita Igbokwe grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds while adding eight points and five blocks.
- As a team, Pitt was outshot 45% to 34.7% while the Irish also won the battle of the boards, 43-38.
- So far this season, Pitt is holding opponents to just 36.4% from the floor.
- Pitt ranks sixth in the ACC and 44th in the NCAA in field goal percentage defense this season.
- The Panthers have held all 19 opponents this season to 45% or less shooting from the floor. It marks the first time in program history they have opened the season with 19 straight games holding opponents to 45% or less shooting.
- Pitt is one of four Power 5 teams this season that have held all 19 opponents to 45% or less shooting this season. The others are Tennessee (#1 FG% def.), Georgia Tech (#2 FG% def) and South Carolina (#4 FG% def).
- The Panthers have held four opponents to 30% or less shooting from the floor this season. It marks the most such games since 2017-18 when Pitt held four opponents to less than 30% from the floor in 30 games played.
- Pitt has held 12 of 19 opponents to less than 40% from the floor, the most through 19 games since 2017-18 (14 of 19 opponents).
- Pitt stays on the road for their next game as they head to Syracuse on Sunday for a 12:0 pm tip on ACC Network.
