
Pitt Falls To Syracuse On Sunday Afternoon, 80-72

SYRACUSE, NY – The Pitt women's basketball team (11-10, 2-8 ACC) fell on the road Sunday afternoon at the Carrier Dome to the Syracuse Orange, 80-72. The Panthers grabbed a season-high 62 rebounds, 24 offensive, in the loss.
Pitt had three players score in double figures as Amber Brown netted a team-high 12 points and seven rebounds. Jayla Everett netted 11 points, six rebounds and a season-high six assists while Taisha Exanor came off the bench and finished with 10 points and eight boards.
The Panthers opened the game with five straight points as Maliyah Johnson finished off a fast break layup and Brown netted a layup and free throw. Syracuse responded with five straight but Rita Igbokwe finished off a layup and Brown netted her second bucket of the game to make it 9-8 in favor of the Panthers early on. The Orange netted back-to-back triples to push their lead out to five, 16-11, but Brown and Liatu King each finished off layups to send the game to the media with Pitt trailing 16-15. Cynthia Ezeja closed out the quarter with two buckets and Everett scored five points over the final two minutes to give Pitt the 25-20 lead after one.
Everett started the scoring in the second quarter with an offensive rebound and layup but the Orange responded with six straight to regain the 28-27 lead just over three minutes into the quarter. The Panthers regained the lead at the media timeout as Ezeja finished off a layup and Sandrine Clesca came off the bench and hit a runner in the lane to make it 31-28 in favor of Pitt. Syracuse came out of the media timeout with eight straight points to take the 36-31 but back-to-back buckets by Exanor cut the Pitt deficit to one, 36-35, with just over three minutes to play in the half. The Orange finished the second quarter on a 6-2 run to take the 44-39 lead into the locker room.
The Orange pushed their lead out to eight early in the third but Dayshanette Harris finished off a contested layup and Destiny Strother knocked down her first triple of the game to make it 49-46 in favor of Syracuse. Syracuse netted the next four points to push the lead to 53-46 and the Panthers took a timeout. The Orange pushed their lead out to 13, 63-50, late in the fourth but the Panthers hung tough and finished the quarter on an 8-0 run as Strother knocked down her second triple of the game, making it 63-58 in favor of Syracuse entering the fourth.
Pitt opened up the final quarter with three points as Igbokwe finished off a layup but the Orange responded with the next five to take the 68-61 lead with seven minutes to play. The Panthers started to pressure the Orange out of the media and it turned into points as Exanor finished off a fast break layup and King netted a contested layup to cut the Syracuse lead to 70-66 with just over three minutes to play. The Orange ran away with the game late as they netted a pair of triples to earn the 80-72 victory.
Igbokwe finished off her afternoon with nine points and 10 rebounds, her third straight game with double digit rebounds, while King came off the bench and provided the Panthers with eight points and six rebounds. Ezeja was big off the bench as well as she finished with a career-high eight points and eight rebounds (six offensive) in the loss.
As a team, the Panthers dominated the boards 62-39 in the loss while also grabbing 24 offensive boards. Pitt also dominated the paint in the loss, 50-26 while the Orange dominated the Panthers in the fast break, 31-15.
Syracuse was led offensively by Christianna Carr who netted 19 points, five rebounds and four assists while Chrislyn Carr netted 17 points, eight assists and five boards in the win.
