
Panthers Drop Second Game of Paradise Jam to Auburn

ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – Despite finishing the contest with a 12-5 advantage in steals, the Pitt women's basketball team fell to Auburn, 82-50, Friday evening on the campus of the University of the Virgin Islands.
The Panthers (5-3, 0-0 ACC) were led in the scoring column by senior forward MaKayla Elmore as she logged 10 points to go along with six rebounds. Freshman Audrey Biggs posted a career-high eight points, going 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Defensively, Pitt logged 12 steals en route to forcing 16 turnovers. Of note, the Panthers have forced 14 or more turnovers in each game this season.
As a unit, the Panthers held a slight edge in fast break points, but Auburn (5-2, 0-0 SEC) controlled the paint – finishing the contest with a 49-22 advantage in rebounds. Additionally, the Tigers ended the game outscoring Pitt, 40-12, in the paint.
How It Happened
After an Aaryn Battle midrange jumper and an Elmore triple gave the Panthers an early 5-4 advantage, Auburn went on a 13-3 run to close the opening period and took a 17-8 lead.
The Tigers opened the second quarter with a 7-0 spurt, extending their lead to 16. Pitt quickly narrowed its gap to 10 in the ensuing minutes, behind a pair of free throws from Aislin Malcolm and consecutive jumpers from Bella Perkins. Auburn outscored Pitt, 15-3, to close the second frame and took a 51-24 lead into the halftime break.
Mikayla Johnson drained a pair of free throws to open the third quarter scoring, but Auburn responded with a 14-6 burst over the following four minutes of play, forcing a Pitt timeout. The Panthers were unable to cut into their deficit to close the third frame and trailed 60-32 entering the final 10 minutes of action.
Pitt was paced by Biggs in the fourth quarter as she recorded a team-high eight points, to go along with two rebounds. Despite Biggs' performance, the Panthers were unable to overcome the insurmountable deficit and fell, 82-50.
