
No. 15 Pitt Drops Dual at No. 6 NC State

RALEIGH, N.C. – The 15th-ranked Pitt wrestling team showed their strength in the upper weight classes but were unable to overcome a strong NC State team, dropping a 22-13 dual decision Friday night at Reynolds Coliseum.
The Wolfpack started the dual by winning five of the first six bouts to take a commanding 18-3 lead. Anthony Santaniello got the first win for the Panthers in the 141-pound match with a 9-5 decision over Tyler Tracy.
No. 20 Luca Augustine got the momentum going for the Panthers at 174, with a 3-1 overtime victory over No. 18 Matty Singleton. After a scoreless first period, Augustine scored the first point of the match with an escape to go up 1-0 heading into the final period. Singleton tied the bout with an escape to send the match into sudden victory. Augustine was awarded a point for stalling with 15 seconds left and held on to win the match for Pitt.
The next match featured the two top ranked wrestlers in the ACC at 184 as No. 15 Reece Heller and No. 11 Dylan Fishback faced off for the second time this season. Heller and Fishback were scoreless through the first period, but Fishback took the lead with an escape in the second and held the lead heading into the final two minutes. Heller took the lead with a reversal, but Fishback tied the match again with another escape. Heller got the first takedown of the match late in the third period and held on to win the match 6-2 with riding time.
No. 11 Mac Stout won the third straight match for the Panthers, his 13th consecutive match win, with a 13-4 major decision victory over No. 26 Christian Knop. Knop attacked early to grab a 3-0 lead, but Stout worked his way back with an escape and a takedown to gain a 4-3 advantage with nine seconds remaining in the first period. Stout was consistent in the second period to extend his lead 8-4 and was awarded four near fall points early in the third period to lead to a 13-4 victory.
The Panthers return home for two ACC matchups, beginning with a matchup against Duke at the Fitzgerald Field House Saturday, Feb. 1 at noon. Pitt will conclude the home regular season schedule with a matchup against No. 19 North Carolina on Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.
