WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Pitt received goals from Magali Gagne, Katie Ellermeyer, and Sofia Doheny as the Panthers posted a 3-1 win at Monmouth Sunday afternoon to improve to 2-0 on the young season. The Panthers controlled the run of play throughout the contest and held a 23-4 advantage in shots.
Pitt got off to a fast start as Gagne netted her first goal of the season and her fifth as a Panther in the seventh minute of action.
The Panthers nearly doubled the lead in the 19th minute as Lola Abraham ripped a set ball off a corner cross to beat the Monmouth goalie high before it pounding off the crossbar and over the end line.
Pitt's high press paid dividends again late in the first half as Ellermeyer stepped in front of pass 25 yards out in the middle of the field. She found Adi Bianchin at the left side of the box and collected a one-touch pass back before depositing a shot from 12-yards out into the right side of the net for her second goal of the season.
Monmouth got a couple of big saves from keeper Tallulah Miller in the 44th minute as she pushed a header from Ellermeyer wide of frame before knocking down a strike by Bianchin to hold the Panthers to two goals in the opening 45 minutes of action.
Ellermeyer continued to put her stamp on the game with a pair of crosses that challenged the Monmouth defense early in the second half. Emily Cooper just missed on the first attempt before collecting the second one and putting it on frame despite a pair of defenders converging on the play.
Abby Reisz kept the Pitt clean sheet intact with a punch save of a Monmouth header off a corner in the 53rd minute, but Monmouth cut the deficit in half in the 59th minute against the run of play as Ashley Lavrich scraped a crossing ball from Loren Gehret over a leaping Reisz.
The Panthers answered back quickly as Abraham drew a foul near the right side of the box. Gagne delivered a terrific cross off the set piece and Sophia Doheny delivered a running header to beat the keeper back into the right side of the net for her first career goal and a 3-1 Pitt advantage at the 61:42 mark.
Pitt remained in control over the final 28 minutes of action to hand first year head coach Ben Waldrum his second win in as many contests.
