PITTSBURGH – Senior Margaret Wilde scored on a header in the 59th minute of action and the Pitt defense held strong for its second clean sheet of the season as the Panthers improved to 3-0 on the season with a 1-0 win over Ohio Thursday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
The opening 45 minutes was a field position battle with neither team finding strong scoring opportunities. Hannah Mingoue had a pair of shots for the Panthers, while Ohio had just one shot on goal.
Pitt nearly broke the deadlock six minutes into the second half with a flurry action in the box. Lucia Wells slipped a thru ball by the defense and Adi Bianchin got a shot on goal that forced a one-hand save by the Ohio keeper. On the ensuing corner, Bianchin banged a header off the cross bar and Wilde fired the rebound on frame to force a save.
The Panthers broke through and tallied the lone goal of the night with a nice combination play down the right wing. Katie Ellermeyer collected the ball near midfield and lifted a pass into the corner where Bianchin laid a pass off between two defenders, Wells split the pair of Bobcats and sent a cross over the Ohio centerback. Wilde did the rest with a header back across the cage and into the net for her first goal of the season. Bianchin and Wells were credited with assists on the play.
Pitt finished with night with an 11-8 shot advantage, including a 9-4 edge in the second half of play.
