PITTSBURGH - The Pitt women's soccer team moved to 4-2-0 on the season after a 2-0 loss on Sunday afternoon to Santa Clara at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The Panthers struggled to penetrate the Broncos' defense, getting outshot 7-6 on the day.
Santa Clara (2-3-0) found its first goal of the matchup with a strike from outside the box by Kennedy Schoennauer, as she weaved through the back line to find an opening on the net for the 1-0 lead in the seventh minute.
The Broncos doubled their advantage in the 29th minute when a throw-in into the box found Hildi Beniktsdottir for the one-time strike into the net. The Panthers entered the break without a shot on goal in the first frame.
Pitt finished the second half unable to break through, despite outshooting Santa Clara 6-2 in the last 45.
The Panthers nearly cut the deficit when a cross from Lucia Wells almost found the foot of Katie Ellermeyer in front of the net. A pair of chances also came for Pitt late in the contest when Ellie Rowlands fired a strike from beyond the box, hitting the crossbar, and Lola Abraham cut the defense for a breakaway.
