PITTSBURGH – Behind a brace from sophomore forward Lasse Dahl, the No. 10-ranked Pitt men's soccer team defeated Butler, 4-1, Monday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
The win snapped Pitt's (3-2-0, 0-1-0 ACC) two-match losing streak and marked the Panthers' first-ever victory over Butler (2-4-0, 0-0-0 Big East). With the result, the Panthers also improved to 37-9-7 at home over the past six seasons.
Notably, Pitt's four goals were the most Butler has conceded this season.
The match opened as a defensive battle, with just four shot attempts in the first 30 minutes.
Pitt broke through in the 33rd minute when graduate midfielder Arnau Vilamitjana slipped a through ball to freshman Loke Mattsson. The Trelleborg, Sweden, native delivered a perfect cross to redshirt junior Marco Silva, who slotted home his second goal of the season. The assist was the first of Mattsson's career.
The Panthers doubled their lead less than four minutes later, as Dahl weaved through several Butler defenders before blasting a shot past the outstretched arms of the Bulldogs' keeper.
Pitt stayed on the front foot early in the second half, recording two shots in the opening three minutes. In the 50th minute, Vilamitjana broke free on a well-timed run and crossed to Dahl, who buried his second goal of the match to make it 3-0.
Less than five minutes later, junior forward Albert Thorsen played a ball to sophomore midfielder Miguel Bertran, who ripped a shot inside the left post for Pitt's fourth goal.
Butler pulled one back in the 71st minute, but the Panthers' advantage proved too much as they secured the 4-1 victory.
