No. 10 Pitt Shuts Out Virginia Tech, 3-0

PITTSBURGH – The No. 10 Pitt men's soccer team opened its four-match homestand with a 3-0 victory over Virginia Tech Friday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field, extending its winning streak against the Hokies to nine consecutive matches.
After a scoreless first half, the Panthers broke through in the 73rd minute when Albert Thorsen converted a penalty kick for his third goal of the season. The penalty followed a Virginia Tech red card, giving Pitt a man advantage for the remainder of the match.
Pitt doubled its lead in the 79th minute as Mamadou Tall found the back of the net off a corner kick from Anders Bordoy. Tall's fifth goal of the season leads the Panthers and gave the team a two-goal cushion.
Santiago Ferreira capped the scoring in the 87th minute, finishing a pass from Bruno Bertran, with Tall also credited with an assist. The goal marked Ferreira's first of the season and secured the 3-0 victory.
Pitt finished with a 10-4 advantage in shots and put four attempts on target, while limiting Virginia Tech to one shot on goal. Goalkeeper Jack Moxom made one save to record the shutout and earn his seventh win of the season.
The victory also extended Pitt's home winning streak against Virginia Tech to six consecutive matches. The Panthers improved to 7-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in ACC play.
Pitt continues its homestand Tuesday, Oct. 13, hosting Duquesne at 7 p.m. at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
