STANFORD, Calif. — Pitt dropped a hard-fought dual to No. 23 Stanford, 21–12, Sunday night at Maples Pavilion, as four of the first five bouts were decided by three points or fewer.
The Panthers battled through several one-score matches early, but Stanford built a cushion by winning the first six bouts, many of which came down to late takedowns or riding-time advantages.
At 125 pounds, Pitt's Tyler Chappell pushed No. 10 Nico Provo to sudden victory after rallying to tie the match at 5-5, but Provo secured the deciding takedown to earn the win. The Cardinal followed with another narrow decision at 133, as No. 7 Tyler Knox edged Evan Tallmadge, 4–0, in a bout that remained scoreless through the opening period.
Stanford continued to capitalize in tight matches at 141, 149, and 157. At 141, No. 17 Jack Consiglio used a late reversal and riding time to defeat Briar Priest, 3–2. At 149, No. 13 Aden Valencia pulled away late to secure a 5–4 decision over No. 23 Kade Brown, breaking a 4-4 tie with an escape in the final 20 seconds. No. 17 Dylan Evans battled back from a 7-2 deficit to trail 8-5 heading entering the third period, but No. 10 Daniel Cardenas held on and secured the 9-7 decision with riding time.
Pitt got on the board at 174 with No. 15 Luca Augustine delivering a key response for the Panthers, defeating Collin Guffey, 5–1. Augustine scored the go-ahead takedown in the third period and added over 1:30 of riding time to seal the decision.
At 184, No. 27 Chase Kranitz followed with another strong performance, earning an 8–6 decision over No. 29 Abraham Wojcikiewicz to cut the Stanford advantage to 18–6. Stanford answered at 197, where No. 13 Angelo Posada earned a 5-2 decision over No. 8 Mac Stout, extending the Cardinal lead to 21–6.
Pitt closed the night with its biggest highlight at heavyweight. No. 15 Dayton Pitzer dominated Luke Duthie, building a 14–0 lead before securing a fall at the 1:32 mark in the third period. Pitzer racked up over two minutes of riding time and multiple takedowns to close out the dual.
