PITTSBURGH - The No. 15 Pitt wrestling team closed its home slate in dominant fashion Friday night, rolling to a 37-0 shutout victory over Virginia on Senior Night inside Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers, now 12-2 all-time against the Cavaliers, remained unbeaten against Virginia in Fitzgerald, improving to 7-0 in the historic venue while earning their second team shutout of the season and first shutout of Virginia in program history. The match marked Pitt's final dual at Fitzgerald Field House before the program moves into the state-of-the-art Victory Heights next year.
Pitt set the tone early at 184 pounds as No. 27 Chase Kranitz opened the dual with an 11-1 major decision over Griffin Gammell to stake the Panthers to a 4-0 lead. No. 9 Mac Stout followed at 197 with a commanding 13-2 major decision against Steven Burrell Jr., pushing the advantage to 8-0.
At heavyweight, No. 15 Dayton Pitzer controlled his bout from start to finish, earning a 7-1 decision over Brenan Morgan. The victory marked Pitzer's ninth win in his last 10 matches and extended Pitt's lead to 11-0.
The momentum continued at 125 pounds in one of the tightest matches of the night. Tyler Chappell battled No. 22 Keyveon Roller in a gritty contest. Chappell carried a 1-0 lead late before Roller secured an escape in the final second to tie it, but Chappell's riding time point proved decisive in a 2-1 victory.
No. 26 Evan Tallmadge picked up six team points via forfeit at 133, and Anthony Santaniello followed with a 13-8 decision over Kyren Butler at 141 to extend the Panthers' lead to 23-0.
At 149 pounds, No. 23 Kade Brown outlasted Wynton Denkins in a marathon bout, prevailing 6-1 in the third overtime period. No. 19 Dylan Evans added another major decision at 157, defeating No. 30 Colton Washleski, 13-2, to push Pitt's advantage to 30-0.
No. 32 Jared Keslar delivered another dramatic finish at 165, scoring a 4-1 sudden victory overtime win against Michael Murphy. No. 15 Luca Augustine capped the night in dominant fashion at 174, earning a 12-1 major decision over No. 32 Nick Hamilton to seal the 37-0 final.
With the emphatic sweep, Pitt (11-4, 3-3 ACC) celebrated its seniors in style while closing a chapter in Fitzgerald Field House history with a decisive victory. Virginia falls to 9-8 overall and 1-5 in the ACC.
The Panthers will turn their attention to the ACC Championships March 8, hosted by Virginia Tech.
