Stanford Pulls Away Late in Win Over Pitt

PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team battled early but couldn't keep pace down the stretch, falling to Stanford, 86-65, Thursday evening at the Petersen Events Center.
The Panthers placed three players in double figures, led by freshman Theresa Hagans Jr., who finished with 21 points and four assists on the night. Mikayla Johnson tallied her 16th double-figure scoring performance of the season with 16 points, adding six rebounds. Fatima Diakhate chipped in 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go along with six boards and two steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Pitt traded baskets with Stanford in the opening frame, fueled by five points each from Johnson and Hagans Jr., and trailed by just three heading into the second quarter. A strong second period from Johnson helped power a 19-point period for the Panthers, highlighted by three-point baskets from Jayda Queeley and Carla Viegas.
After another tightly contested stretch in the third, Stanford pulled away in the final 10 minutes, scoring 27 points and shooting 12-of-18 to seal the win. The Cardinal shot 42.9% from three-point range and capitalized on second-chance opportunities. Chloe Clardy led all players with 26 points while Lara Somfai grabbed a game-high 23 rebounds and recorded a game-high eight assists.
GAME NOTES
- Stanford narrowly outrebounded the Panthers 26-25 on the defensive boards.
- Pitt added nine bench points in the effort, while the Cardinal finished with two.
- The Panthers finished 8-of-9 from the free throw line.
