Crawford, Isham and Scott Earn Wins at Charlotte 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE – The Pitt track and field team had a successful opening weekend at the Charlotte 49er Classic. The Panthers grabbed three event wins in addition to many other top three finishes, personal bests and top-10 program times and marks.
FRIDAY RECAP
- Jaydon Isham won the discus during her outdoor debut, launching a throw of 47.46 meters on her first attempt.
- Maliah Edwards and Jana Bruses got the 2026 outdoor season underway, finishing in second and third places, respectively. Edwards' time of 13.74 is the sixth fastest time in program history. Bruses recorded a time of 13.95.
- In the men's 110 meters hurdles, Jaden Shelton stopped the clock in 14.16 to secure second place. Antwan James was sixth with his speed of 14.41.
- Somiyah Braggs raced into #3 on the program's all-time top 10 list in the 100 meters with her personal best 11.53. Faith Dennis recorded a personal best 11.66, finishing fifth in the same event.
- Che Nwabuko finished in a tie for eighth place with former Panther Malik Ricketts. Both clocked in at exactly 10.692.
- Alma Evuna Eki ran a personal best 55.97 in the women's 400 meters to finish fifth. Success Okoro appeared in her collegiate debut, posting a 57.12 time.
- Both Madisyn Hawkins and Margaret Bila advanced to the finals of the women's hammer throw. Hawkins recorded a personal best 52.35 meters, the program's ninth best throw. Bila's best throw of the series was 50.11 meters, for which she was rewarded with seventh place.
- Colin Kravitz completed the one lap 400 meters race in 47.66, receiving third place. James Long produced a personal best 48.73 for 10th place at the meet.
- Freshman Elizabeth Szybalski made her outdoor debut, competing in the 3000 meters steeplechase where she finished second with a time of 11:06.38.
- Gianna Cagliola had a personal best in the 1500 meters, 4:35.66 for ninth place on the day.
- Freshman Mark Haynesworth Jr. had a huge 52.56 meters throw in the hammer, entering the program's top 10 list in the six spot in his outdoor debut. Haynesworth took fourth overall at the meet.
- Nick Steinfeldt was the Panthers' top finisher in the men's 1500 meters, taking 14th in 3:55.54, a personal best.
SATURDAY RECAP
- Alexandria Scott won the women's 400 meters hurdles in 58.85, a personal best and the program's eighth fastest time. Jana Bruses followed, securing second with her personal best time of 59.44.
- Niya Crawford, coming off a fourth-place finish in the shot put at ACC Indoor Championships, won the event in Charlotte. She threw for 15.82 meters on her first throw of the day, and that's all she would need for the title. Crawford was the only competitor to throw more than 15 meters while Jaydon Isham earned sixth place with her 13.68 meters toss.
- The women's 4x100 relay team of Somiyah Braggs, Faith Dennis, Endeyah Lane and Alma Evuna Eki started the Saturday action with a second-place finish. The group put forth a time of 45.16 to run the eighth fastest race in program history.
- Ava Pultorak ran in the 800 meters run, going for a personal best 2:17.12 for 10th place.
- After recording a personal best in the 100 meters yesterday, Somiyah Braggs ran another personal best, this time in the 200 meters. Braggs' 23.57 time notched third place at the meet and moved her from seventh to fourth on the program's all-time top 10 list.
- Alma Evuna Eki also went for a personal best in the women's 200 meters. She ran 24.06 and collected fifth overall.
- Emeka Ugwu, Ryan Cook and Josiah Montgomery finished consecutively in fifth, sixth and seventh places. Ugwu led the way for Pitt with a 16.20 meters throw. Cook hit 15.92 meters while Montgomery recorded a mark of 15.76 meters.
- Che Nwabuko and Colin Kravitz ran the 200 meters in 21.33 and 21.37, respectively to finish inside the top 10 at the meet.
- Pitt's women's 4x400 team combined for a 3:44.54 pace to claim third.
UP NEXT
The distance group will compete at Raleigh Relays March 26 and 27. The rest of Pitt will stay home for the Carnegie Mellon Invitational March 27 and 28.
