Doganiero, Fenderson Lead the Way for Pitt in Win at Kent State

KENT, OH – The Pitt Panthers (16-6, 3-3 ACC) went on the road and beat Kent State (18-5, 8-1 MAC), 13-4, on Tuesday afternoon behind a dominant pitching performance from Antonio Doganiero.
In his fourth start of the year, Doganiero allowed just one run over a career-high seven innings pitched. The left-hander struck out four while surrendering just two walks and five hits.
Pitt needed just two big innings offensively to pull away from Kent State on Tuesday. The Panthers scored five runs in the second inning before plating eight runs in the eighth.
Trey Fenderson had a career day at the plate going 4-6 with two RBI and a run scored. It's the second time this year he has had four hits in a game. Fenderson is now tied for second on the team in batting average, hitting .352 on the year.
Derrick Tarpley Jr. had his first two-hit game of the season and scored two more runs in the win. He has recorded a hit in each of the last three games. Jackson Cooke hit a grand slam in the top of the eighth inning, his fifth home run of the season. Sebastian Pisacreta drove in three runs on a single in the eighth and added two more runs scored. Lorenzo Carrier went 1-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and added to his team-leading walk total with two more free passes in the win. Carter Dierdorf reached base five times on Tuesday, working three walks and getting hit by two pitches.

The Panthers opened up the scoring with a five-run top of the second inning. Julian Irizarry drove in Pitt's first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right. Caden Dulin and Lorenzo Carrier each knocked in a run on back-to-back singles and the Panthers extended their lead to three in the blink of an eye. Dulin would score on an error and Trey Fenderson would drive in Carrier in another Panther RBI single as Pitt led 5-0 after the first two innings.
Antonio Doganiero kept the Golden Flashes off the board until the top of the fourth inning when Kent State hit a solo home run. The Panthers still led by four runs through four innings.
Pitt's starter continued to deal on the mound, responding with three more shutout innings after the Golden Flashes scored in the fourth. Doganiero finished off his day with another scoreless frame in the bottom of the seventh inning, marking the longest start of his career.
The Panther bats put the game away with an eight-run eighth inning, capped off by a Jackson Cooke grand slam.
Pitt worked three-consecutive walks to load the bases with one out for Trey Fenderson who drove in Dulin on his fourth hit of the day. Sebastian Pisacreta added three more on a single to right and the Panthers led 9-1 in the eighth. A Carter Dierdorf walk and Derrick Tarpley Jr. single loaded the bases for the second time in the inning. In his second at-bat of the inning, Jackson Cooke blasted a grand slam to the deepest part of the ballpark in right center and extended Pitt's lead to twelve.
While Kent State scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Andrew Luzcak came in in the bottom of the ninth inning and worked a scoreless frame the close out Tuesday midweek matchup. Pitt won their first game of the week, 13-4.
The Panthers will host Youngstown State tomorrow afternoon (March 25) at 3 PM at Charles L. Cost Field.
