PITTSBURGH – The Pitt Panthers (28-14, 10-11 ACC) won their fourth game over a ranked team this week as they completed their sweep of No. 10 Virginia (29-16, 12-12 ACC) on Sunday afternoon with a 7-3 victory.
For the first time in program history, Pitt has won four-consecutive games over a ranked team. In 2014, the Panthers had a four-game winning streak when facing ranked teams but those contests were not played consecutively. Each of Pitt's last four games have been against top-15 teams and they have all of them.
Pitt's sweep of No. 10 Virginia was their first over the Cavaliers in the program's history. It also marked Pitt's first sweep over a top-10 team since 2021 when they swept then No. 9 Florida State in Tallahassee, FL.
The Panther pitching staff pieced it together one final time this weekend, limiting the Cavaliers to just three runs on Sunday. In Pitt's four games this week, they only allowed nine runs.
Drew Lafferty gave the Panthers a great start, allowing just two hits and two walks over 4.2 innings. Mikey Gray earned his fourth win of the season with his solid relief appearance on Sunday. David Leslie came out of the bullpen in the seventh inning and closed it out with a three-inning save. He struck out five and surrendered just one run on the afternoon.
Pitt's 2-3-4 batters in their lineup combined for seven hits and five runs scored on Sunday. Lorenzo Carrier collected his fifth three-hit game of the season, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and a walk. Kai Wagner drove in a pair of runs in his two-hit day at the plate. Caden Dulin (2-for-4, 2 R, BB) continued his hot streak with another multiple-hit performance. Friday' hero, Carter Dierdorf, drove in two more runs on an RBI double to help Pitt complete the sweep. AJ Nessler added another hit to his tally this week on Sunday. In four games this week, Nessler batted .421 with eight hits, nine RBI a double and a home run.
The Panthers picked up where they left off with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Caden Dulin started the inning off with a walk and went first to third on Lorenzo Carrier's single to right. Kai Wagner drove in his second run of the weekend on an RBI double to put Pitt up 1-0 after one.
Drew Lafferty faced the minimum and kept the Cavaliers off the board through the first three innings.
Pitt added three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning to jump to a 4-0 lead. Dulin kicked off the Panther offense again, this time with a leadoff single. A walk from Lorenzo Carrier and single to left by Kai Wagner loaded the bases. With two outs, Sebastian Pisacreta legged out an RBI infield single that was hit in the hole between shortstop and third base. With the bases still loaded, Carter Dierdorf pulled a two-run double down the right field line as he extended Pitt's lead to four.
Despite surrendering a run in the top of the fourth inning, the Panther offense responded with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Pitt's top of the order delivered once again as Caden Dulin got the inning rolling with a single to center. Like he did earlier in the game, Lorenzo Carrier moved Dulin up to third, this time on a double down the left field line. Dulin then scored in the following at-bat on Kai Wagner's sacrifice fly to left. With Carrier still at second, Trey Fenderson rifled an RBI triple down the third base line to drive in Pitt's sixth run of the game. Joey Baran tacked on one more run with the Panthers' second sacrifice fly of the inning to make it a 7-1 ballgame through four innings.
Left-hander Mikey Gray relieved Drew Lafferty with two outs in the top of the fifth inning and escaped a bases-loaded jam to maintain their six-run lead.
David Leslie entered to start the top seventh inning and earned the three-inning save. Leslie struck out five batters and allowed just one run as he earned his first save of the season.
Pitt went on to complete their sweep of the No. 10 Virginia Cavaliers with a 7-3 win on Sunday.
